In the book “Maxed Out” by Daphne Greer the main character Max is a kid that likes hockey Max has a brother called Duncan, Duncan who needs to go with Max everywhere, due to the death of his father. Max can’t play hockey and watch Duncan at the same time. There is a big hockey game and the team needs Max. With Duncan, his mom won’t allow him to play. Max and the team were sad.
In The Glass Castle, there are many problems that need to be solved. The major problems come from the parents. Rex Walls and Rose Mary Walls each have unique personalities. Rosemary is very selfish and only cares about herself. She believes that the world revolves around her.

Extended out to most children is the hand of a parent offering a warm hug along with warnings of danger to their children. This is what any fit parent would do. However this is not always the case with all parents. For example in the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Rose Mary and Rex Walls are not fit to be parents because they don’t give their children what they need and have an unstable relationship. Jeannette and her siblings live off of what their parents can afford when they have sufficient money but they don’t use it to give them what they need.
In The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Rose Mary is the mother of the Walls children who often does not act as a true adult. Rose Mary’s attitudes and behaviours are childlike, and therefore her children must take on responsibility for the lack her own. Rose Mary ignores her obligations as a parent and chooses an irresponsible way of life which endangers her children. Rose Mary has never properly matured into adulthood due to her lack of financial stability, bliss ignorance and optimism, and her selfishness nature.

While reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the relationship between Rex and Rose Mary walls and their children became to be very intriguing. Specifically how they raised their kids without holding anything back, an idea reinforced by a famous Walt Disney quote This quote describes how “trying to shield” children ) from reality” wouldn’t “do them any favor.” This idea was enforced by multiple occasions from the book which include letting Jeannette cook by herself at the age of 3, even after getting serious burns from cooking, letting the kids do whatever they wanted as long as they “Used common sense”, and the incident where Rex let Jeannette go upstairs with a stranger because he knew she could defend herself. The first incident revolves around how Jeannette was allowed to cook, even after having serious burns from from cooking. ”She had to get right back on the saddle.”
In the House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the characters each have their own struggles that they must overcome. One of the main traits that separate characters is that who overcomes their struggles and who gives in to them. People should endeavor to make a change in their lives because life is too short to give in to a struggle. Esperanza points out her house to a nun and because Esperanza's house is on the low end the nun makes an insulting remark, Esperanza " knew then I had to have a house. A real house.
Trespass by Julia Alvarez is a short story that depicts the life of a young immigrant girl whose family has relocated from the Dominican Republic to New Jersey and the many emotions, trials, and tribulations that come with such a massive change. The oldest of four girls, Carla, seems to have the hardest time adapting to this new environment and circumstance. When their mother makes a typical Spanish dessert and inserts a candle to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the move to the States, she says, "Let us please go back home, please, She half prayed and half wished" (Alvarez 99). Aside from the anguish of leaving her extended family and the challenges of adjusting to a new neighborhood, school, and country, she has the strongest ties to the Dominican Republic and the most difficulty assimilating to English and American culture.

In "The Last Curiosity," a short story by Lucy Tan, the Woken are described as beings with artificial intelligence that change into humans to see what life is like on Earth. This story shows the aftermath of the destruction of mankind and emphasizes how humans were the cause of their own deaths. They watched over humans for a long time and were curious about what it meant to experience life as humans. While on Earth, the Woken experienced struggle, fear, selfishness, and power.
