In the House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the characters each have their own struggles that they must overcome. One of the main traits that separate characters is that who overcomes their struggles and who gives in to them. People should endeavor to make a change in their lives because life is too short to give in to a struggle. Esperanza points out her house to a nun and because Esperanza's house is on the low end the nun makes an insulting remark, Esperanza " knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to. But this isn't it. The house on mango street isn't it"(Cisneros 5). She under constant abuse from her father so she seeks refuge in various ways. Sally "says she is in love, but I think she did it just to escape"(Cisneros 101). Sally has suffered the abuse from her father because of their religion and she wants to escape from the torment her father gives her. Only to realize that the only way out is marriage. Sally also wants to leave Mango street just as Esperanza does because of her father's constant abuse. Esperanza tells Sally,"Do you wish your feet would one day keep walking and take you far away from Mango Street, far away and maybe your feet would stop in front of a house, a nice one" (Cisneros 82). Sally and Esperanza both want to escape from the treatment of women. Except in Sally's situation, it is much more complex due to her family, friendships, and religion. Sally becomes a different person when she loses her best friend, Cheryl.She walks home straight after school because she has nothing to go to. Sally gives up in life after losing Cheryl. Esperanza narrates her as " you don't have a best friend to lean against the schoolyard fence with, to laugh behind your hands at what the boys say. There is no one to lend you her hairbrush"(Cisneros 82). This is when Sally gives in to her situation when she decides that the game is over. This also leads to Esperanza viewing her as someone to feel sympathetic towards instead of someone to model off
