American Culture During the 1750s-1790s Between the years of 1750 and 1790, Americans started to create their own culture. During the 17th century, people started winning their independence back from Great Britain. The Europeans did this by not following Britain's laws and breaking away from the 13 colonies. Americans established independence during these decades and it was a great thing because they could now create their own culture based on tradition, religion, and values. One of the ways Americans created their own culture was by mixing many traditions and customs together. Slavery played an important role in the creation of American culture. When Europeans migrated from Great Britain, they didn't know how to feed themselves or grow crops. To help them with their agricultural needs, the Europeans enslaved Africans. The Africans were forced to bring their own culture with them to the Americas. Native American culture also influenced the transformation of American culture. Religion affected people’s social and political views in America. For instance, in a democratic government, the idea of freedom and individuality came from religious beliefs. Puritans practiced a religion that heavily explained the importance of a person having responsibility over themselves while still having some form of ‘ruler’. Religion has modified some American literature. Themes of religion can be found in some of the poems written by Emily Dickinson as well as some of Jonathan Edwards’ sermons. Religion was also included in some of the first examples of American education. During the 1780s and 1790s, children who went to school (or got any sort of education) were taught about their religion; Christianity.
