American History: Our Hope for the Future
American History has changed and will continue changing our future in many ways. One main thing that I believe was a great impact in these changes was the Civil War. The Civil War brought many of what we have today to us. One great thing it brought us was our Political and Social impacts. It also united us the people of the U.S. One last thing it did for us was that it brought us many of our everyday things, some of the things we use today and will continue using throughout our lives was brought to us by the civil war. The Civil War brought us many of our everyday use things. Some examples of this would be our home delivered mail, before the civil war, mail was not mailed home. The 13th amendment was a great example of this because it banned slavery, which is great because if we still had slavery people would see other people as less and their would be many more issues in racism than there already is. In 1862 the homestead act was passed, as explained on http://www.history.com/topics/homestead-act, “ Signed into law in May 1862, the Homestead Act opened up settlement in the western United States, allowing any American, including freed slaves, to put in a claim for up to 160 free acres of federal land. By the end of the Civil War, 15,000 homestead claims had been established, and more followed in the postwar years. Eventually, 1.6 million individual claims would be approved; nearly ten percent of all government held property for a total of 420,000 square miles of territory.” This made a great impact with our future because now people owned 160 acres of land and as time passes the family leaves the property to their family and after they pass, they leave it to their family and that is just how it
