My favorite sentence from this reading had to be, "The arms were in sad shape, because everybody was always sitting on them, but they were pretty comfortable chairs." (Salinger 18). In the short sentence, I furthermore get a glimpse of Holden's voice and personality, this time by seeing him contradict himself. He describes how sad looking and beat up the chair is, yet goes on to say how nice and comfortable it is. This to me is a very important clue to Holden's overall personality in regard to life.
As Washington D.C.’s second oldest town, Tenleytown has grown from a country village to a city neighborhood. Much of this transition involved the gathering of the Tenleytown community to fight crises or advocate for their neighborhood. Tenleytown citizens have fought against the relocation of the black Reno City community, fought for the rightful name of their Metro station, and fought against business and residential real estate development. Tenleytown residents have a shared history that has created a sense of place within their community, because they are willing to take action anytime Tenleytown or the community is threatened.
Longtown, Ohio is one of the only places where races didn’t matter two centuries ago. Interracial marriages were happening here without argument or trouble. This system of liberty and freedom of the races was founded by a freed slave from Virginia named James Clemens, who later became a rich farmer, but this system is close to being abolished because of the decrease of the original Longtown population. Their places are being taken by whites and they are also purchasing their property. This will eventually move out the people of Longtown and be a city of whites.
After the Spanish made some fortunate discoveries in South America, the English were determined to strike gold in the north, however, they would soon find out that this “new country” was not so perfect. In the Spring of 1607, about 100 colonists sailed to North America and created an English settlement called Jamestown (Roden 49). Upon their arrival, they discovered that Jamestown was home to some 1500 Powhatan Indians, and, because the colonists didn’t bring the right people to defend themselves from Indian attacks, many people died (Roden 49). The colonist also didn’t bring enough people to ward off disease, drought, or famine.
Christopher Columbus is well known throughout America, so known there is a special holiday one a year on the second monday in October. He’s known for finding America and doing many good deeds for America’s evolution. When people explain why this holiday is celebrated, others are told a great man with the name of Christopher Columbus, discovered America. He traveled from Spain to find Asia, specifically India. What people don’t know is he enslaved many people ripping them from their homes without choice.
People always look back to the past with memories they cherish. In The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden is no different. In this book, the character Holden looks back to happier times and doesn't like things changing. Holden's main conflict is wanting things to stay the same or to go back to how they were in the past; through the way Holden talks about things and the way people were in the past. Salinger suggests that Holden does not want things and people to change, and he wants to be able to go back to the way things were.
“The Underground Railroad wasn’t really a railroad, it was a way that slaves escaped from their owners. The Underground part of the name meant secret and railroad was the ways that people took to be free.” “What are slaves?” Tommy asked. “ And why did they want to escape?”
In life some feel the need to prove something to others. That they are better, stronger, or even more intelligent. Whatever the case may be people will go through extreme measures to prove themselves. But who do we really need to prove anything to? Is it our parents?
During the Colonial time period, people established many great colonies founded on principles of religious and societal freedom. These were a people who were greatly persecuted in England for their religious beliefs and were looking for a way out. “The first colony was founded at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Many of the people who settled in the New World came to escape religious persecution. The Pilgrims, founders of Plymouth, Massachusetts, arrived in 1620.
On August 11th-13th is the 26th Annual LakeFest Drag Boat Race in Texas in Marble Falls, this is in the Highland Lakes region known for its’ scenic natural beauty. The waterways are surrounded by rolling green hills, wildlife and flowers native to the region. The boat race is an extraordinary event to watch especially if you are into fast speeds, spectators can feel the engines vibration and hear the engines roar as they are racing at top speeds over 250 mph. The race begins at 9am but the gates open at 7am and the races usually conclude around 3pm. On Friday Aug.11th fans will be able to meet and greet the race boat drivers and see the race boats up close and personal take pictures and get autographs starting at 7pm.
The railroad was not an real railroad. The underground railroad help slaves out of slavery and to freedom. Being a slave is having to work against your own will. Slaves have some rights and protections according to laws. A person can become enslaved from the time of their birth, capture, or purchase.
The American dream at one point was what drew people to American; the right to life, liberty, and the happiness. The American dream is the hope to acquire currency, large homes, raise a middle-class family, and pursue what brings people joy in life. But in the year 2016, the American dream becomes hard to believe in. The American dream may still exist, but it is not equally accessible to all Americans. This is true because the American dream is not affordable for everyone, it is not available to everyone from different degrees of education, and race and ethnicity creates large social barriers.
