“Between 1940 and 1945 the United States women’s workforce increased from 27% to 37%” (American Women in World War II, 1). Millions of American women took over factory production jobs to aid war efforts. More than 350,000 women also joined the war and contributed from home and overseas. Women also had to take jobs, so free men could go to war. The outcome of World War II would not have been the same if it had not been for the women, because they helped with war efforts, took over men's jobs and went to war. First, Rosie the Riveter stressed the patriotic need for women to enter the workforce (History.com, 5). Women were needed in the workforce to produce weapons and other useful things needed in war. Next, this propaganda also stressed the need to sell war bonds. Women needed to sell war bonds to help fund vital needs for the war. Some women trained other women pilots, towed targets for gunnery practice and flew special planes (Ruggiero, 71). They also operated searchlights and attracted enemy bombers. Not only did women fight in the war, some were also nurses that took care of injured soldiers. 50,000 nurses served overseas and in the United States (Ruggiero, 78).
