Abstract In the last few years, the issue of Marijuana has been a near constant issue. This essay will go through some of the possible effects of legalizing Marijuana. Whether they be health related, economics related, or incarceration related, effects are sure to be seen wherever legalization takes place. When something is legalized, be it a drug, occupation, or anything really, this opens the door for that something to be regulated and therefore taxed. Creating a legitimacy it could not have had without legalization. Medically speaking marijuana has potential to do some good, but without legalization that potential is untapped and can do no good. When the war on drugs began this carried with it harsher sentences for drug users which has caused the prison population to explode and America to lead the pack in Prison incarceration numbers. With the legalization of Marijuana these problems have the chance to be changed, and these effects have the chance to take place. This question was answered when Colorado legalized Marijuana in 2012. Every day the debate of whether or not marijuana is dangerous or not rages on in the news and in politics. With new research released every day, the public consciousness has shifted to the side of legalization for this once thought dangerous drug. Effects are brought on by the legalization of this drug such as a high tax revenue, alternative medical purposes, and a lower incarceration rate.
