America’s New Identity Some of America’s most formative years as a nation were in the very beginning of its independence. These developmental years were shortly after the Revolutionary War in the late 1780s. Some of the most important people in this time were Noah Webster, Andrew Jackson, James Monroe, and the original founding fathers. Americans were successful in developing a unique political, cultural, and economic identity separate from Britain in the years following the Revolutionary War. Noah Webster’s spelling book certainly caused a change in the spelling of some words but it also way of uniting people as a country. His book caused a common way of spelling words that was different than Britain. This was a way to create an culture and identity not marked by British rule. Another way that the Americans created an identity different than Great Britain’s was through the way they wrote their stories and myths. Parson Weems, Mercy Otis Warren, and Washington Irving were all American writers. Their writings shaped American Literature to be distinctly different from British writings. They wrote about life in America, the Revolutionary War, and myths of the founding fathers, some of which are still well know to this day. This distinct writing style further separated British and American cultures. Lastly, the War of 1812 was the largest reason for the gain of American character. The 1812 War caused many strong stories and myths shape the American people. For example, the stories of how the U.S.S Constitution never lost a battle during the Revolutionary War. These stories of bravery and American achievement caused a strong national patriotism. Another example of this patriotism was the writing of the Star-Spangled banner after the battle at Fort McHenry. While industries, territory gain, and inventions fueled American economy. The first drastic economic change was the Louisiana Purchase. Because of how much land was bought, American gained farmland and resources. Andrew Jackson, the president of the time, bought the Louisiana territory with Federal money. He originally bought the territory for the port in New Orleans, but this massive territory would double America’s territory at the time, and therefore create an abundance of opportunities. This purchase would create a whole new way of economy in the coming years. Because Britain was such a small country the Louisiana purchase made America a great deal larger than Britain could even imagine. Another difference was the economical systems. Great Britain had an imperialistic economy while the Americans had an integrated economy that relied on each part of the country to produce, manufacture, and buy goods. In the South crops like cotton were grown and then shipped to the North where they were manufactured into cloth, those goods were then shipped everywhere, especially the West to be sold. The integrated economy meant that they were never purchasing from another country unlike Britain’s system of imperialism. Britain’s economy relied on the resources of the colonies they controlled and not directly on themselves. This was a positive thing for America.
