The Era of Good Feelings played an important role in the America history. During the Era of Good Feelings, many people were moving to the cities to work in a factory instead of farming or working at home. There were nationalism and sectionalism happened concurrently during that time. Nationalism had been raised in America during the Era of Good Feelings, because the War of 1812 and also the Monroe Doctrine, but sectionalism occurred concurrently and had a greater effect in the economics and politics of the period due to the geography, slavery and tariff. Nationalism grew during the War of 1812, when America went to war with Britain. South was mainly concentrated on grow crops and plantations while the North, due to the rocky soil and harsh weather, focused on industrialism. Henry Clay’s establishment of the American System, especially tariff, had worsen America’s sectionalism; different section of the America according to the geography and cultural background had different opinions on Clay’s system of put tax on foreign products. Clay declared “This is only to be accomplished by the establishment of a tariff.” (Document 4) The purpose of Clay’s speech was to make a better system of Hamilton’s idea of national bank and add tariff to protect the young America industry, but in contrast, American system had inflamed sectionalism. The southerners called it the Tariff of Abominations. According to the vote on the Tariff of 1816 in the House of Representative, there were more South representatives who voted against tariff than any other section did.(Document 7) The graph was intended to show people that the southerners did not like the tariff because South sold cotton and other raw materials without tariff, but they needed to buy products with tariff.
