From the reading, I understand that in today’s culture that there are still race relations. Even though both groups of boys came from the same educational background and the same impoverished living conditions. I believe his study and findings are still prevalent in today’s society. In this essay, I will be breaking down the parts and discussing social conditions, poverty, self-esteem and motivation between two “groups’’, the Hallway Hangers and the Brothers.
Both of the main characters have inner battles they struggle to make peace with throughout the novel. The boys also must come to terms with how these battles impact their friendship. One boy lets jealousy and resentment guide his decisions and the other is in denial of the reality of the friendship as well as the world around him. Once the walls of the Devon School stop protecting the boys from their personal battles each boy is able to attain some type of peace with whom they have become and the path they chose to reach this
During a period of time there were two best friends named Gene and Finny. They are very competitive with each other on any activities they completed. One boy has natural skills unlike the other boy who has to work very hard for what he wants. The hard working boy, Gene does not like the way that Finny never has to put effort into anything to get what he wants. Gene has strong feelings for Finny, but later Gene wanted more recognition for his accomplishments from Finny.
The relationship between the protagonist is their brothers in the stories The Sniper and The Scarlet Ibis. In the first story the brothers were on opposite sides. They were shooting at each other and one ended up dying. The relationship was like that because they didn't know who they were shooting at until the end. They were on opposite sides so it was good that he got the kill, but bad because he killed his brother.

Friendship is a wonderful yet confusing thing. This concept is brilliantly displayed in Chaim Potok’s The Chosen. In the book, the main character, Reuven, and Danny Saunders become friends through an interesting turn of events during a baseball game, the short version being that Danny ended up putting Reuven in the hospital with a baseball in the eye. After Reuven gets over some feelings of bitterness towards Danny, the two grow to be great friends. While it can be used for pure fun, competition also inadvertently creates a healthy hierarchy between friends.
