Sally Wang Professor Nash History 1301 13 October 2014 Concept of War Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels recounts the Battle of Gettysburg through the eyes of key leaders from both the north and the south. Shaara provides insight into the thoughts and decisions that were made that would inevitably determine the outcome of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. The northern concept of war that they were fighting for the sake of freedom and to restore the union by taking in prisoners and preserving he high grounds at Gettysburg helped them force the Confederates to retreat.
The novel that I chose to read was The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. The Killer Angels is a historical fiction novel based on the Civil War. The setting of the book starts in June in 1863 on the 29th and goes through July 3rd. The story starts in Pennsylvania with the Confederate army moving towards Gettysburg in the span of the first few days. The main characters are General Robert E. Lee who was the commander of the Confederate army, Lee’s number two, General James Longstreet and Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain from the Union side.
In the novel Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers, the main character is Richard Perry. In the beginning of this book, Richard was a generous and eager to start as a soldier in the Vietnam War. He soon becomes responsible and understanding of what it is like to be a black soldier in the war and how hard it can be to the other soldiers. Near the end, Richard becomes powerful and alerted near the end of the book. This character clearly relates to the theme of the book, which is age and race can impact somebody’s life a lot.
The book first copyrighted in 1974 by Michael Shaara is “The Killer Angels”. This book is a historical fiction book and takes place in Gettysburg in 1863. The story starts on June 29, 1863, the four main characters that we see the most are General Robert E. Lee, Lieutenant General James Longstreet, Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, and Major General John Buford. The book changes it’s point of views between these four men to get different perspectives of what is going on from June 29th to July 3rd of 1863. It all starts with a spy showing up and informing Longstreet that he saw the Union army moving nearby, this information shocked him because General Stuart was supposed to be on the lookout for the Union.
Old fashioned, hand made clothing, reserved lives, playgrounds that only consist of a cement slab, and a school system that only teaches through the eighth grade are peculiar to the outside world. These oddities are just the surface of the unusual practices that take place in the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. The FLDS church is one of the largest Mormon fundamentalist denominations and one of the largest organizations in the United States whose members practice polygamy. Polygamy is illegal, in 1890 the Mormon church ended its practice of polygamy, which created a split in the church. Fundamentalists moved to secluded areas where they could continue their practice of plural marriage.

In the book Fallen Angels by Walter Myers, Richie Perry struggles with the idea of moral ambiguity. Perry struggles for two reasons, the first is with the idea of if he is good or bad, does killing for your country make it right? The second reason Perry struggles with moral ambiguity is because he wonders what are all of them doing in Vietnam in the first place, were they really accomplishing anything? First, the idea of good or bad.

There are several perspectives shared from gay and straight people. The book describes how isolated gay people can feel, but how different organizations are helping to connect some of these people. The middle of the book also describes the trial of Russel Henderson. Outside the Albandy County Courthouse Fred Phelps was leading an anti-gay demonstration. Blocking Phelps and his supporters from view were a dozen people dressed as angels.
Even to this day, shame about one’s sexual orientation remains a prominent topic. Whether one identified themselves as gay, lesbian, and transgender, society viewed them and their actions as a sin, a crime, and a disease, which only increased the amount of shame–a painful feeling of distress or humiliation caused by the consciousness of wrong or fooling behavior–they saw within themselves. Then changes began to occur as a group of gays, lesbians, and transgender people confronted police in an event known as the Stonewall Riots or the Stonewall Uprising, which became a turning point for gay liberation. Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home is a 1980s, family tragicomic-graphic memoir that addresses this perspective turning point through the use of the labyrinth
The Symbolic Meanings of the Hold Button While facing a life-threatening illness, one tries to hold on and tries to control things around them. This is very prevalent in Angels in America by Tony Kushner. The hold button that Roy uses contains a good deal of symbolism in regards to his control over his life, but also to his control over words and their meanings. Through this, one can see his continuing attempts to gain more control over his life as it is slipping away from him. Not only is Roy’s use of the hold button symbolic of his repressed gay identity, but it also enables him to assert his dominance and control over words, his fate, and others.
The story takes place at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in America, when desegregation is finally achieved. Flannery O’Connor’s use of setting augments the mood and deepens the context of the story. However, O’Connor’s method is subtle, often relying on connotation and implication to drive her point across. The story achieves its depressing mood mostly through the use of light and darkness in the setting.
Alison and Bruce’s individual analysis shows contrast between the daughter and her queer father that carries significance that shines light on their complicated relationship before he got hit by a truck. As a young girl, Alison didn’t understand why her father did the things he did. Often, she would sit back and watch her father as he worked hard on the interior design of their home. On occasion, her father would make her and her brothers help him move items around.
