There is an ongoing discussion among philosophers as to whether animals have rights. I think that this question can be expanded upon as, what role do animals play in our society, and are these role ethical. Regan and Singer are two well-known philosophers who are in favor of animal rights perceive animals as being essentially equal to that of humans. Some animal rights advocates do not distinguish between human beings and animals. I consider myself to be an animal lover, but I do not consider animals to be our equal. I think that animals do not have rights in the conventional sense, but I still find it morally wrong to abuse an animal or cause unnecessary pain. The animal welfare philosophy states that the use for human needs ranges from companionship, for the use of food, clothing, and medical research. It explains that at the same time animals are to not experience unnecessary suffering when providing for these human needs. This implies that more humane treatment is required when killing animals, whether it is on a farm factory or when being used as a research subject. In the works of Pollan "An Animals Place," his views are that the reason animals are being mistreated these days is because we have lost daily contact with animals. Even though I personally believe we were created by God, I do not question whether having a soul or not be the deciding factor as to decipher animals from humans. I do believe that there is a natural food order such as a bug will eat plants, spiders will eat other bugs, and lions will catch and eat gazelles. It is a natural process in life, every living creature will have to eat, and this is a fact. The Bible says, "We shall have dominion over the animals" (Genesis, 1:26).
