So the poet can express what he is trying to prove through and entertaining way. The imagery device enhances the poem to make it stand out more so it grabs the reader attention. The Red Pony Essay John Steinbeck’s novella, The Red Pony is an excellent example of minimalist novella. His descriptions of themes, symbols, and the final chapter are very intriguing and easy to follow. When Steinbeck uses symbols he puts them very furtively in his books. Example, in The Red Pony the cypress tree means death because almost everything that is involved with the tree dies. But i’m not here just to talk about symbols i’m also here to talk about the theme and the final chapter.

The poem “The Tyger” by William Blake vividly describes an unknown being that is both beautiful and dangerous. Blake compares beauty and danger and how each trait adds to the other. William Blake does this by creating a tone of awe and intensity, using the literary devices diction, syntax, figurative language, and imagery. William Blake uses diction or his own unique word choices to add to the tone by using words like “burning bright,” and “fearful symmetry.” These word choices add to to the intensity of the tone.
The word ‘but’ reflects the child’s uncertainty, finally bringing him to the conclusion that he is in fact powerless. Another technique that the poet uses to emphasise the child’s powerlessness, is the personification of the landscape. The child describes the ‘darkening’ garden to be ‘watching’ him, creating a sinister tone. The word ‘watch’ builds up tension as he is meant to be alone; however he senses someone or something else’s presence. This metaphor is used to compare the garden to a predator waiting to attack him, showing his powerlessness.
The Romantic period believed that emotion was a form of intelligence, and art was a path to transcendence. As a result of the change in beliefs, Romantic poetry is often characterized by nature, imagination, memory, and wisdom. Imagination acts as a source of creativity, and allows us to see what is not immediately apparent. The Romantics believed that we could discover the imagination in nature, which often resulted in a harmony of the two. However, there are times when nature and imagination are in conflict with each other; for example, when imagination acts as an illusion, and distracts us from confronting the issue.
Modern poetry is in open form and free verse. It is pessimistic in tone, portraying loss in faith and psychological struggle which is quite different from the fixed forms and meters of traditional poetry. Secondly, modern poetry is fragmented in nature, containing juxtaposition, inter-textuality and allusion. It has no proper beginning, middle or end. Thirdly, modern poetry is predominantly intellectual in its appeal, rather than emotive.
