Identity, it lives inside someone, it makes them who they are, it makes them stand out, it's something they found out by themselves, right? Someone’s identity can be impacted by societal normalities, friends and family. It may not be solely found through one person's eyes and experiences. In the book The Poet X the main character and the people she surrounds herself with go through the struggles of finding their true identities. The book is a poetic novel that follows a Latina teenager named Xiomara. Xiomara describes the experiences she had with growing up, dating and parental struggles, while trying to follow her dreams of becoming a poet. However the theme was prominent in the poem, Things You Think About in the Split Second Your Notebook is Burning. Acevedo conveyed the message of feeling helpless and alone through this specific poem. For example she wrote, “if i were nothing but dust would anyone chase the wind trying to piece me back together” (Acevedo 310). Xiomara felt as if she was alone and misunderstood because her parents were telling who she was supposed to be, making her believe that she was unsupported. Furthermore the use of figurative language grabbed the reader's attention while demonstrating the importance of the power of words. The poem was short with three verses yet it was one of the impactful poems of the book. The words used were dark but significant which ended up making the readers relate back to their own life and makes them dive into similar feelings they have had. Power was shown through deep, sharp and cutting verses about loneliness. Xiomara faced many struggles with identity with most falling under the category of female identity. These struggles were shown throughout the whole book but specifically in the poem After. Lines stated from the poem were “It happens all the time” and “it simply never stops”(53). She was constantly harassed by men but that was seen as okay and normal. This made an impact on her growing up and feeling towards expressing herself. She couldn't do certain things without being seen as a “whore” when that was far from the truth. Solely being born as a female made her life completely different to others around her like her brother. With these notions that she lived with, her identity was at odds with who she wanted to be due to the fact of others belligerent
