“Conflict cannot survive without your participation” writes Wayne Dyer who is an author and motivational speaker. In the world, people cannot overcome conflict without other people helping out. If people help out things will be better in the future. Conflicts might be a fight in a family, a family dying, or something showing up that people don’t expect. The authors of these three stories: Sherman Alexie’s “Because My Father Always Said He Was The Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ At Woodstock,” Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings: A Tale for Children” show lots of conflicts and how two main conflicts in the stories. The father was arrested and was charged with attempted murder, which was brought down to assault with a deadly weapon. He was convicted and had to go to jail for 2 years. When his father was in jail he missed him. He would lay there and wait for his father truck to come home and he would play Jimi Hendricks music. This shows the conflict because the kid misses his father and fathers should always be there with their family and his father isn’t there so the kid misses his father and wants him to come home. In the story it says, (Alexie 25-26) “I would lie awake all night and listen for the sounds of my father’s truck.” He thought that his father would be coming home and he would listen but he would not come home. He missed his father and just wanted him to come home and do the things they used to do. At the end of the story his father leaves his mom and him and ends of living in Phoenix. His father got on a motorcycle waved to him and then rode off. He sent postcards once a week, then it got to once a month, and then it got to Christmas and his birthday. This shows conflict because the son wants to be with the father and thinks about the father all the time and the father just wants to ride his motorcycle. The family was going to go on vacation when they found out that the Misfit was out of the penitentiary and was on the loose. The grandmother did not want to take the kids to Florida with the Misfit on the loose and she wanted to go to Tennessee instead but the rest of them wanted to go to Florida. This shows the conflict because the grandmother wants to go to Tennessee but the others want to go to Florida. It says, (O’Conner 1) “The grandmother did not want to go to Florida. She wanted to visit some of her connections in east Tennes-see and she was seizing every chance to change Bailey’s mind.” Then she says, (O’Conner 1) “Here this fellow that calls himself the Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida.” The grandmother is trying everything to change Bailey’s mind from going to Florida. She tried to use the Misfit as an example why not to go to Florida and go to Tennessee instead but Bailey said if she didn’t want to go she didn’t have to. Another example of conflict in the story is when the family gets into a crash and the Misfit then kills all of them. The family was driving and the grandmother took them down this road and they got into a wreck and the Misfit and his friends came and then they killed all the family.
