“Through others we become ourselves” ( Vygotsky ). In order to understand one's identity we must look at the contributing factors that society has to offer. Cultural identity can be discerned as “invisible web composed of values, beliefs, ideas about appropriate behavior, and socially constructed truths” ( Trumbul 9 ). Considering this definition, I realize that my cultural identity can be best represented by my family because they have taught me their morals and expanded my views on the world as a whole. Various aspects of a person's life may determine his or her cultural identity including education, religion, and community. People can be influenced by religion, education, family, and neighbors. As one becomes older, people develop preferences and dislikes towards various people, music, or extra curricular activities. Individuals become comfortable around specific people and learn to become a part of his or hers community. Transitioning from one location to another can make one feel unwelcome in the environment. In the poem “Legal Alien”, the poet describes a young girl being an outcast by saying she is “viewed by Anglos as an exotic, inferior, definitely different” (Mora 9-10). When someone does not fit into the community he or she feels left out. The world might not always be accepting to those who are different than others. In the literary text “By Any Other Name”, a child walked into her classroom noticing all the indians in the back of the class. She walked into the class she was aware “they were all sitting at the back of the room, and i went to join them” (Rua 44). This was an allusion of the act of inequity towards the child when she came into the classroom. Without friendship and equality in a community, how will someone learn to trust one another?
