Albert Einstein as an American Icon
Albert Einstein is an example of an American icon because of how his image has evolved over time and how he is woven into our society. He started off in Germany as a young genius, eventually came to America and made his most famous discovery, and is now more known for his looks and name than for his scientific discoveries. Einstein matches this definition in many ways including his marketability and humorous sense of style. Einstein has made his way into many products including toys for children. One example of a popular toy is a funko pop doll which is a bobble head that is made to look like thousands of different people or characters. Einstein was first made into a funko pop in 2019, and thousands of the toy have been sold since then. On Ebay, there are fifty-five results for “Albert Einstein Funko Pop” and on Mercari, seventy-four of the toys have been sold. Clearly, at least seventy-four people were willing to spend a minimum of $25 for a figurine of Einstein, and at least fifty-five people are in possession of one and want to sell it. This shows how involved Einstein is in our culture because this Netflix show aired in 2018, sixty-three years after his death. His involvement in pop culture is also very different compared to his real life because they are not completely about science but more about his lifestyle, romantic interests, and other general life topics.
