Language is a critical component of any young learner’s holistic development. It is an important and practical skill that allows young learners to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with others around them. Even before children develop speech, they use their baby language to communicate what they need and to get help from their parents and caregivers. These person in their lives are so aware and in tuned with them that they understand what they need and provide the comfort and assistance that the child needs. As the child grows and develops though, language skills evolve and words are produced so that the child can communicate at a clearer level with those around them.

The more language they are exposed to the greater their comprehension and speech abilities will be. The early childhood years are where a child experiences the greatest ability to learn and grasp new things and at this stage of development rapid growth takes place in the language segments of their brain. If they are not exposed to language their development will be severely delayed and this will cause frustration for them in both tasks at school and at home. Children need to be exposed to language and allowed opportunities to use the language that they have learned. If they have inadequate stimulation meaning they are not spoken to, not allowed to speak or didn’t get the opportunity for interaction, then they will have inhibitions with language. Children in low socio-economic backgrounds whose parents have a lower quality of life may experience inadequate stimulation. The parent may struggle to support the language needs that the child has and often have a limited time in which they can interact with their child causing them delays. The child however needs to be allowed the opportunity to play, and talk with others in their environment. This way they will get the stimulation they need to learn and use the language skills they have
