Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian communication theorist has brought a new perspective of media to the world. He said, “The medium is the message”. To McLuhan, what is important, and what changes the society is the media itself, not what is being delivered through it (Telegraph Reporters). He describes that development of civilization can be traced through the different mediums of communication at a given point in history. Humans have begun communication through speech, which allows them to share ideas with others near them, and then writing has been introduced to humans. This has given humans ability to detach their ideas and be understood by others, later communication technology advanced even farther through printing press, which allows larger population to have access to the same message …show more content…

McLuhan has described internet 30 years before it has been created. For this reason, McLuhan is often called a prophet or the oracle, he predicts the new medium through observing the media itself. Similarly, George Orwell, writer of the novel 1984, is also a prophet in sense of McLuhan as he views the media for itself. Throughout 1984, Orwell develops dystopic society through the medium, telescreen, versificator, and microphone which oppress the people of Oceania to achieve totalitarian government.
