In part one of Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus uses his epic hero qualities to help him out on his quest to get back home to Ithaca. In the epic The Odyssey, the epic hero Odysseus shows many hero like traits, in my opinion the most important trait would be loyalty. Odysseus, the hero of The Odyssey, first shows the trait loyalty on the Land of the Lotus Eaters. Odysseus sends three of his best men to check out this island, but bad luck has them and they run into Lotus Eaters who are addicted to the Lotus Plant. The next they know is the three men become addicted also.
Imagine the craftiness it would take to weave through monster infested seas for ten years. Now, imagine the temptatious traps and how hard it would be to restrain from falling victim to them. In the Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus has to use these traits to survive a long voyage after angering the gods. Even though he is a larger than life character, I can show that I also demonstrate these traits on a daily basis.
Appropriation is defined as being able to shift ideas, visuals, key concepts, characters and settings from one context into another in order to manipulate old notions into new innovated ones, for example the Odyssey by poet, Homer in comparison to Margret Atwood’s the Penelopiad. The Penelopiad as a modernized, fresh view of a vaguely described character, which originated from the Odyssey named, Penelope. Penelope is an obscure or cryptic female character who is interpreted to be a cunning, sly, secretive, intelligent, passionate character that can be compared to Shakespeare’s Juliet. There tends to be much similarity between many different works. This essay hopes to show the reader the similarities between Homer’s, The Odyssey, and DreamWorks Animation’s, Flushed Away, in the form of their journey. In The Odyssey we follow Odysseus on his journey from the Trojan War to his home, Ithaca, which unbeknownst to him is overrun with suitors, who eat all his food and try to take over his country by marrying his wife. Along the way he makes many stops at island where he meets many different kinds of creatures and people. He faces many challenges and obstacles, many set him back and push him further from his home.
Heroes pass down the idea of what good qualities a human should have, but some show how power can get to your head. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus shows the complete opposite qualities by being merciless towards people that do any wrong to him, relentless in how his instincts come upon him, and violent towards any misfortune that happens to him. Odysseus cannot be considered a hero because he shows the opposite values of hospitality, loyalty and how much revenge is in his heart. Odysseus displays discourteousness or the opposite of hospitality to the suitors in his home because all he wants the outcome to be is violent without any understanding. While Odysseus gets angry with Polyphemus earlier in the story by saying, “...who dared to eat your own guests in your own house.” (9.479) Odysseus wants to kill every one of the suitors that is trying to marry Penelope, Odysseus 's wife.
The essay then goes to talk about how Art tries to make the whole thing have to do with him, like he has to be the center of attention. The author says that readers need to look at the story in a different perspective and take a different approach that has not yet been taken or something
In the book The Odyssey, the main character, Odysseus, is a man who is loved and respected by many. In the beginning of the book, we learn that Odysseus has left on a journey and, since it has been many years since his departure, many people assume that he has passed. On his journey, he portrays his many traits, not all of them being good ones either. Some of his good traits include his cunning, bravery, and hard work ethic. On the other hand, his negative traits are his excessive pride, immense curiosity, and rather large temper.
The epic The Odyssey and the movie O Brother, Where Art Though has similar events and characters. Both the poem and the film seem to have characters that have the same qualities or roles. They also have some events that are similar, such as Big Dan T’s death by the burning cross and Polyphemus loses his vision by the flaming spear. Many characters have the same roles in The Odyssey as the characters in O Brother, Where Art Though. An example of similar characters is the blind railroad conductor and Tiresias.
