Daisy Pham Language Arts Honor February 2nd, 2017 1st hour Anthem The book Anthem was written by Ayn Rand is a Science Fiction Book. This Science Fiction book would be unknown since the Author didn’t exactly give the time in the book. In the book Anthem there wasn’t any clues or hints that it took place in 1900’s or the 2000’s. Ayn Rand is a Russian-American novelist and she is known for writing books.
At the beginning of Anthem Equality has changed his mind about a lot of things in the beginning of the story. Equality got picked to be a street sweeper by the government, but he really wanted to be a scholar but couldn’t because of the government. Equality had a rough life. Well he was a street sweeper but he was smart enough to be a scholar the government did not think he was. In the book anthem by ayn rand Equality was not good for any body or anything at the beginning he had a rough start to his life.
In Anthem by Ayn Rand International 4-8818 agrees to keep Equality 7-2521’s secret of the tunnel under the ground because much like Equality 7-2521, International 4-8818 is different than the rest of the people in the place they live in. This is because while Equality 7-2521 explains how he found the hole that led to the tunnel he talks about International 4-8818 and explains that, “they are a tall, strong youth and their eyes are like fireflies, for there is laughter in their eyes. We cannot look upon International 4-8818 and not smile in answer. For this they were not liked in the Home of the Students, as it is not proper to smile without reason. And also they were not liked because they took pieces of coal and they drew pictures upon the
The word contentious means tending to argue or strife; quarrelsome. This connects to what the chapter is portrayed in many ways. In this chapter, Equality 7-2521/ Prometheus go to the council to discuss the light box and all of their discretions. I think that this chapter title is exactly what is going on in this chapter because they spend most of the chapter arguing with Equality. On the second page, Equality tells the council that they are street sweepers.
This made Equality find out who he is and gave him the chance to be an individual. Equality’s views and mindset changes through out the book. He was born in a society where people are named by numbers. A world where people are used as machines. In this world the word “I” is out of existence.
Why was this book controversial? Which themes or ideas were challenging to society? Controversial material in Anthem, by Ayn Rand, includes brief use of profanity, issues of morality, and exploitation of women. Also, controversy surrounding Ayn Rand’s work is the over-emphasizing of individualistic ideas she displays, as well as the adoration of egotism.
In Ayn Rand’s novella, Anthem, mankind is a philanthropic machine. The brotherhood nobly works together to achieve a common goal. In doing so, each man is asked to disregard his own personal means and goals. For every decision must be a collective thought and every advancement, a joint action. However, one man in this machine malfunctions.
The City in Ayn Rand’s dystopian novella Anthem imposes many strict regulations in regard to what its citizens are permitted to do. In the City, none may stand against the crowd or show any differences. Rules to keep everyone in place and to keep the system running regulate the citizens from birth until death and every interaction that will fall between. They can’t express themselves in any way that separates them or shows a uniqueness. They are one and must always remain as such, but when an individual diverges and shows individuality, chaos ensues and the rules are broken leaving room for a new and different society to emerge.
The book first starts out at the home where he was in a school type system until he was 15 years old when he was assigned to the “Home of the Street Sweepers” where Equality 7-2521 was assigned his job/ line of work. This meant that Equality 7-2521 had that one job and was to live in that one place. The next important setting in the story was the Cave, from the Unmentionable times. In this cave, Equality 7-2521 discovered and tried to learn about how living things worked, he also tried to harness the power of the “Sun” in his box and how the light worked. This cave is a big key in the development of Equality 7-2521’s character.
Anthem is a fantastic book which is my opinion from what I have read so far. I think chapter 2 was probably my favorite chapter, and if it wasn’t, chapter 3 would definitely be next. Though the first chapter was great, chapter 2 got me hooked. It talks about Liberty 5-3000, she is the love interest. I think all stories need a love interest.
Anthem Synopsis I read the science fiction novel Anthem by Ayn Rand. Anthem features a struggle between morality and progress through the eyes of one brother named Equality 7-2521. The story is set many years into the future, which can be proved with “It took fifty years to secure the approval of all the Councils for the Candle . . . We cannot alter the Plans again so soon.” (Rand 74).
Anthem is a novel that was written in 1937 by Ayn Rand, about a dystopian society that only believes in the word, “We”, and its only most exciting resource is a candle. To this society they have no clue what it means to be an individual because their leaders take away their individuality whether that is by, eliminating the way they allow their citizens to communicate with each other or even by not evolving the society from using candles to using lights. In this novel the protagonist, Prometheus is a rare citizen because he has a sense of individuality and he is able to realize heta his community is doing is not right. As the novel goes on the reader is able to see that Prometheus becomes an individual as he falls in love for a girl, Gaea that he met while working. This girl helped Prometheus become an individual because believed in his creation and that belief pushed Prometheus to show his invention to the world council.
Anthem is a science fiction which is written by Ayn Rand. It tells the shoking future were people have no freedom of speech, act or do watever they want to do there is one guy who’s name was equality he is a street sweeper and very smart. Who had great pation to be a scholar (scientist) in those times but most of them didn’t want him to become a scholar because his teachers thing he is so smart kind of our opposite world now and they think we are unmentionable time which was very dangerous to them they always thought what we left behind was dangerous but equality thinks opposite he thougt the stuff we left behind can help there world so he go inside a tunnel and so some bulb and wire he connected the wire and at last it lit up and he made it ready for showing this invention to scholar
Ayn Rand is a talented author whose use of literary elements makes her novels all the more interesting. A significant example of this is when Rand articulates the use of the story Adam and Eve throughout the chapter by conveying explicit meanings and making connections to help the reader better understand the situation that the characters are facing as they enter into a new phase of their lives with more knowledge than they had before. Adam and Eve is a tale from the bible depicting the events that occurred the first time humans were created and the first time they sinned. The story begins when the protagonists, Adam and Eve, make a mistake by taking a bite of the apple they were told not to as it would give them “the knowledge of good and evil,” (Fairchild).
"We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever’”(Rand 19). In Ayn Rand’s dystopian novel, Anthem, the citizens are trained from birth to think only in the plural, to the point where they cannot even conceive of individuals, but only see each other as part of the whole group. Rand’s protagonist, Equality 72521, begins the novel as a street-sweeper who is devoted to the group, but begins to move towards individuality as he progresses towards pure selfishness, as Rand believes we all should. Rand uses the words “we” and “I” to represent Equality’s journey from being dependent on the group, to being utterly independent of everyone.
