Rhetorical Analysis of Shooting Dad The story “Shooting Dad” by Sarah Vowell discusses a story about a teenage girl and her relationship with her father and how they are constantly clashing with each other because they are almost exact opposites. The author develops her story by creating images in the reader 's mind to describe events that happened in her life, the use hyperbole for comedic relief, and irony for emotional effect. The use of these emotional strategies is effective because Vowell is able to use these strategies to help the readers understand the relationship between her and her father. Overall by the use of strategies like imagery, hyperbole, and irony the author creates a piece of writing that shows the relationship between the main character and her father.
Olivia Seeney ENGL 305 The Art of the Essay 3/22/17 Insert Flap A and Throw Away Analysis The main point of this essay was to point out to the reader the ridiculous state of human nature when presented with a situation that is outside of our expertise. As we observe the narrator’s struggle to put together this cardboard toy, his use of both overstatement and understatement show the progression of his frustration with this task. One example of this ironic language can be found in the first sentence when the narrator states “I made a most interesting discovery: the shortest, cheapest, method of inducing a nervous breakdown ever perfected. (Perelman)”
In John Updike’s poem “Ex-Basketball Player” the poet uses literary devices to depict the existing way of life of a once-famous sportsperson. Flick Webb was in before times a gifted athlete on his high school basketball team, and he was commendable of much awe. However, Flick never acquired any other skills to prepare him for a future. Accordingly, he now is locked into an unskilled job and his former glories have pale to all but Flick himself. Updike has created a character that is at this point in time going nowhere and spends most of his time thinking about his former days of glory.
Brad Bell 01/18/2018 WR121 In the story “Arm Wrestling with My Father” by (Brad Manning) Manning talks about his relationship with his dad and how they communicate and show affection towards one another, he goes on into the story talking about how things change over time and how somethings that you used to fantasies about are now merrily a thing of the past and you no longer wish for those things anymore and begin to realize that what you have in even better. In the story the author uses both sight and touch to really communicate with the audience on how his father and him interacted around each other, both when they were younger and as time went on and things changed. Also In this essay Manning used tone to establish the effectiveness of the story.
In a struggle for freedom, a parallel between the tale of King Gilgamesh of Uruk from the story, The Epic of Gilgamesh and the legend of William Wallace of Scotland from the movie, Braveheart, begins to emerge. However, reflection and refraction in attitude and ability to attain freedom between the two heroes are notable when taking in the effects of their rivals, the inspiration of women in their lives and close friendships that help bring courage and success in their quests. Although, the two characters diverge from similarity as, Gilgamesh has a deep desire to be liberated from death’s grip while, Wallace aspires to release himself and the people of Scotland from the oppression brought forth by England, nonetheless, it is freedom they seek. The struggle for freedom that our two characters endure results from conflict with opposing personalities.
P: The short story ‘pride of seven’ by Robert J. Krepps, portrays the thematic tension be describing when given the chance you should always do you your best and never half ass it. S: The author goes on to explain, E: That when “The lioness must have told El Asfar about us, for a few minutes later his own broad muzzle poked out between the leaves that half hid the entrance to his lair”(5). E: This explains the thematic tension by showing when given the chance like when he puts the gun barrel in the layer he doesn't shoot he just backs down. It also shows that he does get the chance to kill the lion but fails to follow
The theme in the novel “All Fall Down”is not to judge people without knowing the full truth about them. One way the reader is led to the theme is by observing the conflict and resolution of the story. Another way the reader is led to the theme is by the authors use of figurative and descriptive language that makes the reader feel different feelings towards the scarred man. Finally, the character development helps lead us to the theme throughout the way Alli Carter makes people feel towards the main characters Grace and Dominic the Scarre Man. Ally carter’s novel “All Fall Down” displays the conflict of human vs self.
Defending Jacob With an abrupt ending and an insight on a fourteen year old boy with a cruel hobby, this intense book can have more in common with other texts than anticipated. To clarify, Defending Jacob by William Landay, “If” by Rudyard Kipling, and “The Art of Resilience” by Hara Estroff Marano display how a person owns the ability to change what happens in his or her life. This theme is exhibited through figurative language, imagery, and foreshadowing. By including figurative language, the authors of these literary works were able to enhance certain elements of the story. For example, in Defending Jacob, the neighbors continued to see Jacob as if “He was a pariah, whether he was actually guilty or not (Landay 388.).”

Wrestle the mountain is set in a small coal mining town in West Virgina. An 11 year old boy named Jed Tate was determined to no follow in his father's footsteps by not working in the mines. He has the dream of doing wood craft and has the skill to make it happen. Hopefully with the help of his school teacher he won't follow family tradition into the mines. Jed had a small family consisting of just him, his, mother, father and two sisters.
The art of writing has been displayed through timeless classics and modern tales that bring people together, but whether a piece is written in the 4th century BC or the 1990s, all authors captivate their audiences by connecting to them to the story and establishing an emotional connection to its characters, plot, or theme. Stories such as Sophocles’ play Oedipus Rex, Shakespeare’s play MacBeth, or Tim O’Brien’s novel The Things They Carried establish intriguing storylines which develop emotional connections and relationships between the audience and the text. Throughout all three works, fear is a motif that is used to express the theme of main characters sharing a fear of displaying weakness. Characters in Oedipus Rex, MacBeth, and The Things They Carried establish fear as a motive for using poor judgement and acting out to protect themselves from displaying weakness.
Professional wrestling, for better or for worse, has always paid heavy attention to the physiques of those who step into the ring. The fans like extremes, or at least that’s the theory. They want to see absurdly muscly performers battle it out with ridiculously overweight opponents, which has led to some pretty interesting bodies over the years. However, chiselled physiques are quite difficult to maintain and fat bodies are unadvisable to maintain, which means for every awe-inspiring body in pro wrestling, there has been an awe-inspiring body transformation. Because pro wrestlers, especially those who perform for WWE, are constantly in the spotlight, these body transformations are usually impossible to hide and often times are the cause of much unwanted attention and mockery.
I was not ready. That was always my excuse. But I never knew how much fun it was to lose. Wrestling was a sport I have wanted to do since at least my sixth grade year, if not earlier. Physical contact sports always intrigued me, and I wanted nothing more than to play them.
I don’t remember the exact date, but it was during my freshman year, after a wrestling match against Kentwood high school. We were the two best wrestling teams in our division. So, knowing how big this match was, the whole wrestling advertised and promoted it all week. Our efforts paid off because that following Friday the stands were packed. Students from both schools came to support, but one side was going to leave disappointed.
Wrestling itself can be a dangerous sport to compete in. Although the act of wrestling isn’t the most dangerous part of the sport in general. Wrestling can be extremely stressful since a simple mistake can allow a novice wrestler to beat an All-American (someone who makes it to the final 8 in the national wrestling tournament). Sports have been an important part of my life, and wrestling is no different than the rest. Stress can be a scary thing to think about when talking about sports, and the stress it puts on people can be quite noticeable.
