Analysis Of Bilger's Essay 'The Last Meow'

Pet owners say that they will take care of their pets no matter what. Bilger’s argument is that people’s love for their pets has gone too far. Although Bilger is incorrect because some people use the money to help their pets, he is primarily correct because people spend their money on stuff their pets don’t need and how some pets are forced to endure more than they have to.

I concede that bilger is wrong because In “The Last Meow” the Leverings were willing to spend 15,000 dollars on their cat Lady to help her. Shawn Levering said “If Lady comes through this thing alive, I won’t think about it twice.” In other words after the surgery was done and lady was alive and well he would not mind that he spent 15,000 dollars on his cat. Even though this may be a ridiculous amount of money to some people, i believe that if someone would have the money to help their pet they would do it.

One reason why i argue bilger is correct is because people spend too much money on unnecessary items for their pets, they buy expensive clothing for them and or pay for expensive places to take them. In “The Last Meow” Bilger mentions “We can take our dogs for daycare or psychotherapy and buy them $200 cashmere sweaters and leopard-skin beds.” In other words …show more content…

In “The Last Meow” when Bilger mentions “Sometimes we think the pet is forced to endure more than it should.” Bilger tells the reader a story about a sick dog named Taberia. Who he mentions that she was “ancient for her breed” and that she had a “tumor.” The owner of the dog did not want to put her down, but just take her home and try to cure her dog herself. Eventually the veterinarians convinced her to let them put the dog to sleep. In other words bilger felt like some dogs are forced to tolerate more than they have to, like this dog who was already old and was sick but the owner still wanted to keep her
