What does it mean to “take the bullet” for someone else? It could literally mean that you take the bullet for someone, like a royal guard for a king; however, it could also mean to take misfortune, damage, or punishment, which may be upon someone else, against yourself. In Rudolfo Anaya’s, Bless Me Ultima, we experience a journey of a young boy, Tony, growing up and making difficult decisions that will affect his life. We follow along the teachings of Ultima, a curandera, as she gives Tony knowledge about herbs, the Earth, and the power of evil. An example that illustrates the feeling of Narciso’s love for the town, “‘At least let us try to talk to him,’ Narciso begged. I knew that it was hard for a man of the llano to beg,” (20). Based on Tony’s words about Narciso I can infer that Narciso dearly cares about his friends because Narciso “lost face” in front of his town mates by begging for a dear friend, Lupito. A piece of knowledge is shared in my family, my grandfather shares, “Those who love and care, even after disappointment are the most wise and caring.” Narciso is a man who had lost his young wife to sickness; she was taken by the plague. Despite losing a loved one, facing much disappointment, he still is loving and caring toward his friends. Narciso made the effort to save Lupito, showing his level of caring for his friend. Naturally, Narciso would be considered very sensible and sympathetic as he still loves and cares despite facing a huge obstacle in his life. In addition, when Tony mentions, “... it was hard for a man of the llano to beg,” the readers can see that Narciso is loving and caring as he makes the effort to save a close friend. Narciso, when nobody else did, attempted to save Lupito and avoid violence and sinning in the town. Apart from losing respect from his fellow comrades by begging, Narciso made the last effort to prevent another sin in the …show more content…
“I could not understand why Narciso, who did good in trying to help Ultima, had lost his life…”(186), sketches a perspective to look at, the perspective that Narciso was not the town drunkard, but a town hero. Based on Tony’s thoughts I can infer that Narciso did not mind losing his life for a good friend because he willingly went against all odds and fought through more than what he was capable of. As a child growing up, I always had a feeling that you are who you are for a purpose, you are destined to do something, be a part of something or to start something. I believe I was born to start something, whatever it may be; I came here with a reason. Narciso came with a reason to bring good to the town, just as the God in the sky came as the Golden Carp to protect his people. Narciso was part of the community to put a check on others and be the wise man to make the right decisions. Narciso has been put in the town to help and serve his community. Furthermore, Tony’s thoughts, “... Narciso, who did good in trying to help Ultima,” creates the sense that Narciso was there to prevent sins in the town and help overweigh the evil in the town, he gave his best effort and put all the support he could toward his friends. He ran the extra mile, he gave a helping hand, and he achieved his
