The sound of crunchy leaves and twigs breaking. Whitney grabbed his rifle and held it in the direction from where the noise was coming from. Then the noise had stopped but they still couldn’t see whom or what it was. After a few in silence they began to do what they were doing before the noises started to happen. Then, the perfect bright idea came upon him. Tree-ear went to Min’s wife asking her if he could make the journey to Songdo for Min. Min’s wife decides to ask Min of Tree-ear’s favor, merely if he meets her requests.

Yet, Sal did not want to believe that it was a bird singing but instead it was a tree singing as she did back In Bybanks Kentucky, when a bird started singing at the top of her favorite sugar maple tree. Yet she did not believe that that was a bird singing but the tree was singing. Or when something as simple as kissing a tree brought back memories of the farm back in Bybanks Kentucky and sometimes even brought back memories of her mom.
In A Single Shard the narrator shows how Tree-ear is intrigued in what the potter is doing, and wants to see more. Tree-ear wants to see more of the potters work and wants to keep coming back to watch the potter. Tree-ear sees that the potter is unhappy with the work he has done and keeps attempting it over and over again. Tree-ear doesn't understand why he keeps doing it again, since to him, it looks perfect every time. Also in A Single Shard, it isnt Tree-ears first time watching the potter.

At the beginning of the novel, one emotion Tree-ear had to experience was pain. He worked for a man named Min chopping wood and fetching clay.
A Single Shard is a novel about a young orphan, Tree-ear, who dreams of becoming a master potter. He often watches the master potter, Min, at his work. However, when Tree-ear breaks one of Min's ceramic masterpieces, he must work for Min to pay off the debt. After the agreed time was up, Tree-ear asked to keep working for Min, in hopes of one day learning how to make pottery. During this time, Tree-ear toils to help Min achieve his dream of receiving a royal commission, and eventually gets adopted as Min’s son.

Tree-ear is an orphaned boy who lives in a small village on the West Coast of Korea and had a care-taker, Crane-man, that passed away. Tree-ear’s traits and personality changed throughout the book. Tree-ear’s features changed gradually from the beginning to the end.
