Dylan Thomas’s famous elegy “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night” is perhaps the greatest example of villanelle in modern poetry, using death as its focus. Death is a unifier in the sense that no man, big or small can resist their eventual end. Symbolism can be seen throughout the nineteen lines that Thomas put together; he uses this style to create a blood lavishing state of mind. Words like “burn,” “rage,” “gentle,” “dark,” and “goodnight” all represent a different object or task.

To start off with this thought, Thomas begins by starting off with “wise men at their end know dark is right” (4) This denotative tone suggests that men who have experienced life see no real need to press on, nearly apathetic as one sentence “Forked no lighting”.
