Dylan Thomas and Catherine Davis use two different styles of tone to explain the subject of death. In “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas uses negative words but the positive diction that is used is in a negative sense creating a greater pessimistic tone. For instance, a repeating line in this Villanelle says “Do not go gentle into the goodnight” (Dylan 1). Dylan uses the positive phrase goodnight to represent death, a negative theme. The diction in “After a Time” by Catherine Davis differs from Dylan Thomas’s use in which is it negative throughout.

In an effort to keep his father alive, the author tells him to “Rage, Rage against the dying of the light”. Although death is inevitable, Thomas refuses to let it take over his aged father’s life. Over and over Thomas reminds his father to fight against the acceptance of death because his life is not complete without him. As a Certified Nursing Assistant, I have had the opportunity to experience how certain people reach a point in their lives where they feel defeated as if there’s no point in living anymore.

Due to the diction the Dylan Thomas chose in this poem, the tone was set as very solemn or somber. Words like “rage”, “dying”, and “curse” set this tone because all of those words are words that we associate with a negative connotation. Another way that Thomas sets this tone or mood is when he uses positive connotative words right next to negative connotative words like, “... dying of the light.”

In “Do not go gentle into that good night”, Thomas said that old people has to die someday, but they do not want to die. Smart people know that they are going to die and death is inevitable, but they still do not want to die. Good men fight to be alive and wild men also do not want to die. Although grave men feel that a little light in the dark is warm and comfortable, they still do not want to die. Thomas did not want his father to die, but he wanted his father to rest in peace.

He does this by the structure of his poem and utilizing light and dark imagery. The poem is written in iambic pentameter, while the poem as a whole is five tercets and a quatrain. Thomas uses a form of villanelle which presents the last time of each stanza in an alternating rhyme scheme with both lines being repeated in the last stanza.
Never have I read a poem that carried such power and weight in its words than "Do not go gentle into that good night" by Dylan Thomas. Following suit with my other preferred poems, this is a relatively straight forward poem that has meaning clear as crystal. There is no single part of this poem that didn't leave me impressed, even the structure chosen was brave. To date, "Do not go gentle into that good night" has been the only poem to both give me goosebumps and tear up, which I was not a fan of in the middle of class. All in all, I have never felt a poem as strongly as Thomas's.
As humans we may not appreciate life simply because it is not what we expected or wanted for ourselves. While appreciating life you must also appreciate what you have in life, every moment good, bad, small, large, easy, or hard. No two lives are the same every moment causes different feelings for each person involved. Death brings forth thoughts of loss, grief, anger, or fear. People tend to think of Death as a sly snake stealing away loved ones. However, American-Romantic poets William Cullen Bryant and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, seem to think differently. They both see death as a normal aspect of life. In the poem“Thanatopsis”, written by William Bryant, he portrays death not like the mysterious shadow that should be feared but the calming embrace of Nature.
