Steve Jobs once said "No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life.
As of now in the book, the reader’s understanding is that Thomas is dead, and our mentality is once you are dead you are dead and there is no turning back. Before Thomas was “killed” he had found happiness and was content with his life, “as for [him], he is whole. His mind, his heart, his being, all of him is in the paddles, the canoe, the water, and his song, too.” (286) Hogan keeps on sending the reader’s messages making them wonder about the contentedness of Thomas and how they can receive the same happiness. In this point of the book, the message from Hogan is that Thomas is enlightened and even though his death happened he is still content with
West with the Night is memoir written by Beryl Markham, she writes about her life growing up in Kenya, the colonial British East Africa at the time and how she aspired to become a female aviator. It is argued that Markham didn’t write her memoir, but rather her third husband Raoul Schumacher, a ghostwriter and journalist. Regardless of who wrote the memoir, Markham’s adventurous life is written for the readers to explore. The first half of the novel Markham writes about her life growing up in Kenya and how adventurous she was.
People are able to recall and cherish those days and rights that were better and more comfortable than this night, which is dreamless and endless. Another reason he points out is that death would make it possible for him to meet many famous people who are died earlier, for example Minos, Radamanthus, Aeacus,

Even with all the advances that America has had in their health care and their research with cancer treatments there are still patients that get diagnosed with terminal cancer and they have no hope. Dying is a natural thing that everyone will have to do at some point in their life. In the book Physician Assisted Suicide: Expanding the debate the Author talks about how people all have the right to live and with that should come the right to die (Battin, M. P.). This is also a moral decision and will vary with every person. Some people are at peace with dying while some fear it.
Death is a natural process that will be experienced by everyone at some point, desirably at the end of a long, well lived life. The reality is that no one knows when that time will come or how it will happen. Unfortunately, for the terminally ill, death is in the near future and it is a sobering reality. Therefore, when that time comes, people need to know that they will have options, and the assurance that death does not have to be an agonizing end. They can choose to endure the annihilating pain that comes with the disease and allow it to take its natural course or choose to put an end to it, surrounded by those who love them.
Then, Thomas states that good men also fight for their life. Even on their death bed they talk about how they could have done more good deeds in their life: “Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright / their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay” (Lines 7-8). Next, he describes men that lived life to the fullest and learned they were ill when it was too late; but they still fight for their lives: “Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, / And learned, too late, they grieved it on its way,” (Lines 9-10). Last, he describes very ill men who can no longer see, but are still happy be alive: “Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight / Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,” (Lines 13-14).
In the Book I discussion of old men, the man who has overcome the animal desires is the most at peace with his life and his impending death, while the other fears for what he has lost, and what he may yet lose in the future when he dies. Yet, while the fear of death is primal, animals do not contemplate it. When it is their turn, they simply allow it to happen. Animals do not suffer from the same contemplation of death that we do as humans. If the animal nature is not to fear death – that is human.
Everyone has to face death. There are some people who fear death because it will take them away from their loved ones and rip them off what they have earned throughout their life, such as money, honor, and power. However, there are people claiming that they do not fear death since they have experienced many wonderful moments in their lifetime. Death sounds so terrifying because it means an end of someone’s life. Reading Epicurus’ “Letter to Menoeceus”, I will argue that a reason to not fear death is that we do not exist anymore after we die.
People should have the right to choose whether they want to live or die. If patients know they are going to die, then they can be with their family and friends and live life knowing that they will die soon. This practice also doesn’t cause as much fear. If the patient knows he or she is going to die within six months, then it will be easier to take in. If a patient doesn’t know when he or she is going to die, then it’s always going to be in the back of the patient’s mind, and this can cause fear.

Through the essay, Thomas writes about different occasions of living things come to an end on the lives. The last paragraph is dedicated to an accident that he witnessed of a car with two soldiers who were hit by another oncoming car. The soldiers waited patiently having conversation with the people who came to help. The witnesses asked how they were feeling as they worked to pry the two soldiers out of the obliterated vehicle, they replied with, “Sorry about the accident. No, we feel fine.”
