Society views college as the door way to success. However, many people fail to realize the same effort put into college also needs application after or failure starts creeping in from the side. Anna Chinero, a recent graduate, moved back home after failing to find a job. Chinero concludes her article, “Elevated by the Train”, by expressing, “instead of always looking out toward somewhere else, I’m beginning to look around here, wondering how I can make this neighborhood the better place my parents always sought for me.” Many graduates, like Ana, loose direction in attempting to achieve their dreams they possessed entering college.
Cutterham’s essay, Students are Anything but Coddled, is effective because it uses classroom dynamics and university protests. Cutterham uses examples of how students are changing the dynamic in clasrooms and on campuses through social media and protests and argues that students are not soft and pampered. In his essay, Cutterham uses the example of protesting students to show that today’s students are not “coddled”. He uses an example of Naimh McIntyre.
He does not like how his students have taken on the role of the “informed consumer” or the “calm consumer expertise” that fuels their responses (4). His strongest claim here is that universities are “ever more devoted to consumption and entertainment,” and he supports this claim of fact throughout this section by giving his readers a taste of what he is covering in the sections to follow, and it is one of many of Edmundson’s examples of ethos (6). He mentions how critics have many theories as to why and how “education is in crisis,” and he makes a concession by giving that to them, as long as their theories are “used well” (6). Towards the end, Edmundson states that in order to further understand what is behind the culture here in universities, the “realms of expert debate and fine ideas” need to be left behind so that these “experts” can let the behavior of the students on campus and in classrooms speak for itself
In the article, “College Pressures,” William Zinsser discusses the many struggles college students face while trying to focus on their studying. He convinces the reader of his point by using different types of rhetorical strategies. Zinsser’s usage of the rhetorical strategies such as getting straight to the point, quoting, paragraphing, the use of word pictures, and choosing a title was effectively done in his article to persuade his reader of the struggles faced by college students. The author did not waste anytime getting to the main point in his article, which is effective because it makes me interested in what he had to say.

Kevin Carey explains how the price of a college tuition have risen across the United States. His first point describes that students are asking for to many “creature comforts” and college oblige them causing tuition to skyrocket. Lastly, he points on that colleges are marketing themselves this way on purpose. Now colleges are marketing “creature comforts” instead of focusing on education.

Her premise is “college is a waste of time and money.” She explores her premise thru topics such as why students attend college?,cost of college, career preparation, material learned, job market outlook, estimates of students in college and financial return on school. Caroline Bird throughout the article uses interviews, statistics and personal real life stories of families, to demonstrate her claim.
