Freedom and Liberty depending on who you are these words may mean different thing to you. To find out more about this interesting topic I read the book chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. The book gave helpful insight about how each side of the American Revolution felt and what freedom meant to them. The Patriots, Loyalists, and slaves each had very different ideas of freedom specific to them. The first side of the war the patriots believed freedom was to be free from the Loyalists and things there way without having to pay taxes to the British. Anderson states, “The congress have judged it necessary to dissolve the connection between Great Britain and the American colonies, and to declare them free and independent states” (John Hancock 123). The second side I will be discussing today is the slaves who were kept by both the Loyalists and the Patriots during this war. Anderson also states, “If an entire nation can seek its freedom why not a girl” (Isabel 147). Isabel is a prime example of what slaves believed about freedom during this time. They believed freedom and liberty was to be no longer be enslaved and to get to go wherever they wanted. The final side of the war who’s opinion I will be discussing today is the Loyalists, the loyalists opinion on freedom differed in many ways from the other two I have already discussed. The loyalists opinion on liberty was that it was unrealistic and outrageous. There opinion was this way due to the belief that they established the colonies and without them they would never have even been started. This leeds into the loyalists
