In The Absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian written by Sherman Alexie the main character Junior tries to follow his dreams. Dreams are what people should strive for but yet many do not even try to follow them. Junior’s sister and Sherman Alexie both were following their dreams to “save their lives”. Junior has a sister in the book who is lived in their basement and was not following her dreams, while in “Superman and Me” Sherman Alexie writes about how he is trying to follow his dreams to save his life.
Junior Spirit from the novel “ The absolutely true diary of a part -time Indian” has many dreams and hopes he wants to achieve. He has to go through many obstacles to get what he desires. The whole novel itself has many different outcomes for a theme but in my opinionn, his dreams are the main one. Junior Spirit is a 14- year old Indian boy who lives with his family and other Indians in the rez. In the rez, Junior is more of an outsider than a popular kid.
In the book The Absolutely True Diaries of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie tells the story of Arnold, a boy who grows up on a reservation and changes schools to go to a school off the rez. He left the reservation to have a better chance at life. These are the similarities and differences between Arnolds life on the reservation and his life at reardan high school First there are many similarities between the rez and rearden. At both schools he was a basketball player.
Sometimes when you think someone has given up all hope, they might just surprise you and run; run towards their dreams and use the last glimmer of hope they had left. They surprise you with their sudden barrage of inspiration. Starting from reading the title I found myself trying to predict what the book was going to be about all that came to me was a book about the story of an Indian men. The title itself gives an identity to the main character. Even from the first page of the book, in the fist sentence it shows you who this boy is. “I was born with water on the brain” he says.
In Sherman Alexie’s story “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”, Arnold has many odds stacked against him having a successful experience when transferring to Reardan high school. Despite being quite smart, he is not taken seriously when sharing his knowledge because of his race. After being humiliated by his new science teacher Mr.Dodge in class, Arnold thinks to himself, “I remember when people used to think I was smart” (Alexie p.86). Another factor that made his transfer harder was his speech impediments. Arnold suffers from a lisp and a stutter and was often bullied for them back at his old school.
Students have learned that years ago, the government had abused their power over Native Americans. However, teachers rarely cover the modern day, real life issue of lives on Indian Reservations. Native Americans were given land by the US government, such as the Navajos who were given 27,000 square miles of land that stretches through the states of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico (Discover Navajo). However, other than giving them land, the government does little else for the Navajo people on the reservation. In the novel Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexie gives the reader a great representation of what life is like on these reservations.
Arnold’s journey to the off-reservation school, Reardan would’ve been very different without friendships with his lifelong friend Rowdy, and his new friends at Reardan, the sweet Penelope, ex-bully Roger, and nerdy Gordy. He is regularly bullied and faces many hardships as he decides if his reservation or new school is a place to call home. The main theme is that If you learn to accept and fight through your struggles, they will be resolved easily. This can also be shown in the book as he struggles with his race and his family being in poverty.
In his book the Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexie portrays a teenage boy, Arnold Spirit (junior) living in white man’s world, and he must struggle to overcome racism and stereotypes if he must achieve his dreams. In the book, Junior faces a myriad of misfortunes at his former school in ‘the rez’ (reservation), which occurs as he struggles to escape from racial and stereotypical expectations about Indians. For Junior he must weigh between accepting what is expected of him as an Indian or fight against those forces and proof his peers and teachers wrong. Therefore, from the time Junior is in school at reservation up to the time he decides to attend a neighboring school in Rearden, we see a teenager who is facing tough consequences for attempting to go against the racial stereotypes.

The genre of the story is Young Adult Fiction and the story mostly takes place on a Spokane Native American reservation. The story is about a teenager named Junior who lives on that reservation and is different compared to all the other kids on the reservation.
Sherman Alexie uses a wide variety of writing techniques to emphasize the points he tries to get across in his book, A True Diary of a Part Time Indian, about the world and his culture. Those techniques are hyperbole, parallelism, dark humor, imagery, analogies, repetition, dialogue, and improper use of language. These techniques contribute to the creative ways Alexie portrays his culture and life. In my pastiche I used repetition, analogies, and dialogue to portray my situation as if Alexie himself wrote it.
Overcoming a challenge, not giving up, and not being afraid of change are a few themes demonstrated in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Perhaps the most prominent theme derived from the novel is defying the odds, or in other words rising above the expectations of others. Junior Spirit exemplifies this theme throughout the entirety of the book. As Junior is an Indian, he almost expects that he will never leave the reservation, become an alcoholic, and live in poverty like the other Indians on the reservation—only if he sits around and does not endeavor to change his fate. When Junior shares the backstory of his parents, he says that his mother and father came from “poor people who came from poor people who came from poor people, all the way back to the very first poor people” (11).
I wanted to find him, and hug him and beg him to forgive me for leaving(217).” He and Rowdy have been friends for a long time and that is because Arnold appreciates him. After all the times they do something wrong to each other, they still stick together. Rowdy has always backed him up and Arnold always works hard to keep them friends. When Arnold moves schools, Rowdy does not respect him.
There are main themes in every novel some may be obvious while some require research and analysis to find. In The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, there are many themes such as bullying, racism, drug abuse and alcoholism. Though only a few of those apply directly to Junior, the protagonist, there is one that he is affected by more than any other. This one is isolation.
