In Bauldelaire’s poem, “Get Drunk,” time is personified into an enemy of anyone who lives and enjoys life to the fullest. He shows the reader how to overcome the obstacles of time by “getting drunk.” Bauldelaire suggests to get drunk on whatever one desires. We spend all of our time glued to work, money, and power and give no regard to finding happiness. The writer uses the word “drunkenness” in an unconventional way by celebrating the independence of the mind, spirit, and heart. Drunkenness of the mind can only exist when we let go of the burden of time. The writer uses the clock to describe our deficiency of such. Strong and graceful, the bird is unhampered by physical force. Bauldelaire uses the bird to represent the freedom we could achieve. With the ability to go almost anywhere, the bird is inexplicitly drunk. The bird is always flying, with infinite amounts of open space. Our hearts, they are always dreaming of new wishes to feel whole. If we allow time to burden this, our lives will never be fulfilled. Inevitably, the happiness of fame and fortune will leave us and then what are we left with? Our hearts feed off of the bird’s ability to break free of the idea of time. The term, get drunk, is more than a physical intoxication, as one can see. We cannot live our lives in constant enslavement to time. The bird, the wave, wind, and the star are trying to tell us to go out and find something worthwhile to intoxicate our being; to let go of the clock, and idea of time. In doing so, we are liberating ourselves and will be able to live out life to the fullest. Time is irrevocable, but, Bauldelaire suggests to fully lose yourself, to “get drunk,” to ease this
