Analysis Of Hitler's Gamble By Adam Tooze

In November 2006, Adam Tooze published an article titled, “Hitler’s Gamble”. The article debates whether or not Adolf Hitler intended to start a war over Poland in 1939. Tooze gives a new interpretation of the matter after exploring the views of other historians. He states that the German economy at the time played a big role in starting WWII. A question is provided, asking why Hitler would provoke international tension right before WWII. Tooze provides explanations from historians, mainly Richard Overy, who believe that Hitler did not intend to start war with Poland. Ian Kershaw, another historian, thinks that Hitler made a “miscalculation”, but Tooze explains that a miscalculation is not a very popular opinion. He also states that many …show more content…

By 1936, it would’ve been challenging to fight other countries for the Germans. Because Germany had been malnourished from guns and goods in WWI, many Germans, including Hitler, believed this resulted in a “stab in the back” for their army. A few years later, in the 1920s, the military thought that upcoming wars would be a total war. All the economic resources would go to supporting the nation’s victory. Hitler commanded Germany into extreme war preparations to turn his country into a powerhouse before other countries were able to. A plan was introduced in 1938 to expand his army and quintuple the size of the Air Force. In nearly every one of Hitler’s projects, he planned them to be completed by the mid-1940s. After examining Adam Tooze’s “Hitler’s Gamble”, I’ve concluded that I support his thesis. There were many facts, statistics, and examples in the article that led me to believe that Hitler did not intend for war in 1939. The fact that Hitler started massive construction and military projects were to be completed around the mid-1904s confirms this.
