Latinos accounted for only 4.9% of the characters across 100 top Hollywood films in 2013. From the beginning, Hollywood had always been dominated by white men and women. However, as time progressed there was a very slight change in cultural and ethnic diversity. Though it is more likely now than ever to find a latino or latina in a Hollywood film, their roles are often small, stereotypical, and almost entirely unimportant. As if it wasn’t hard enough to get any role in any Hollywood film regardless of ethnicity, Latinos have to endure playing a harshly demeaning role. She was very educated, she got a bachelor’s degree in social work at Texas Women’s University. However, despite graduating college and having all of the job opportunities her degree gave her, she wanted to be an actress. She was very talented so she wanted to find roles that suited her intelligence and talent. But, Hollywood entirely disregarded what Ontiveros was capable of bringing into the industry along with her talent and her intelligence. For the most part, Lupe Ontiveros was only able to be cast in films as a minor character- usually a maid. This Hollywood stereotype was reflected upon her thirty year career. Ontiveros was cast as a maid or housekeeper in over 150 roles in various films. She was featured in major blockbusters such as The Goonies and As Good As It Gets. In both of these globally acknowledged films, Lupe Ontiveros plays a housekeeper or maid. Keeping in mind that even being in the industry for over 20 years, (which is remarkable regardless of ethnic background) Lupe Ontiveros still only had luck being casted as a stereotype and not a role that did her justice. They say this because we live in an era where there are shows like Orange is the New Black and Superstore. Shows that don’t avoid taking a minute or two to focus on the Latino cultures that some of their characters were derived from. However, Orange is the New Black is not ground-breaking in terms of the Latino representation in the media. Even though this Netflix series doesn’t avoid taking a moment to shine light on Latino culture, it also doesn’t avoid problematic stereotypes. There are seven Latina actresses and one Latino actor. If slightly examined, it is not hard to find the stereotypes and hyper-culturization of these characters. This show, however diverse it may be, portrays its Latino characters as spiteful thugs that have way more children than they should. Not to mention, their overdone character
