How easy is it to assume a person’s language or their occupation based off appearance? Some of these thoughts may be optimistic, other times the assumptions can be negative enough to create hatred of a stranger. These initial thoughts can be credited to self-observation and hearing the experiences of other people. Depictions of Mexican culture in U.S. media affects the interaction between the two country’s citizens.
Stereotyping and Ethnocentrism Stereotyping and ethnocentrism can lead to the same result if taken to the extreme but have different concepts. The show Family Guy, has characters of all cultures that fulfill stereotypes; this makes it an excellent source to pull examples of the attribution people portray onto Hispanics. Consuela is a Hispanic woman who works as a maid and speaks broken English; is it thought that she needs simple words to comprehend what is said. Some movies are even based on stereotypes. The movie Maid in Manhattan is about a young Hispanic single mother working as a hotel maid. It is a very popular stereotype that Mexican women are always cleaning houses to make ends meet and that if a maid is Hispanic, they will have very thick accents or little understanding of English. Nacho Libre is one of the few movies involving a male Mexican lead-character and is not centered around violence and drugs. However, the movie does portray the country of Mexico as a poverty stricken third world country filled with deserts and orphans. Another big problem with this movie is that the main character, Ignacio, is portrayed by the Caucasian comedian Jack Black.
