Union Soldier in Battle “Union Soldier in Battle” by Earl Hess, gives an insightful and truly detailed look into the lives of American soldiers during the civil war. This book not only discusses what the battlefield was like but it also goes into depth on how soldiers dealt with coping with what was happening around them. Hess draws his work from letters, diaries, and memoirs of Union soldiers; by doing this, Hess is able to expose the soldier’s deepest fears and also their sources of inner strength. He shows how they were encouraged by belief in God and country, or simply by their sense of duty; how they came to rely on the support of their comrades; and how they learned to muster self-control in order to persevere from one battle to the next.
In Legend by Marie Lu the author develops the theme of Day’s perspective on life to reveal that you need to live everyday to its fullest potential because when you don't you miss out on so many opportunities and it's just better to live one moment at a time and try and soak everything up. The author tries to explain that you just need to slow down and enjoy everything because maybe in that next moment you won't have anything. At this point in the story Day and June are sitting in an abandoned railroad car, when June asked why Daniel chose his street name Day, and he responds. “‘Each day means a new twenty-four hours. Each day means everything’s possible again.

Envision your home turning into a battle ground, breaking up into military bases—flipping the world upside down. This chapter “The Ghost Soldiers”, showed us how Tim O’Brien and the other soldiers were dealing with the war both physically and psychologically. It also shows us how the Tim O'Brien behaved and felt when he was shot, wounded and had a bacteria infection on his butt and how the war changed the way he thought, and viewed the other soldiers around him. This chapter also contain a lot of psychological lens. From the way Tim O’Brien felt when he was shot and separated from his unit to a new unit to when he wanted revenge on Bobby Jorgenson for almost “killing” him.
The novel acts as a response to the era it discusses by solidifying the un-generalized version of war through fictional anecdotes of the narrator and characters (Reed 1). The emotional truth is never portrayed correctly through historic context or media while the author was able to reciprocate the sentiments of the soldiers through the graphic battles or actions written in this novel. 3. Factors that influenced the author to publish this novel was partly due to his way of coping after war, using stories to keep the imagination alive. Towards the end of the book, O'Brien revealed that
Days before the massacre, the thoughts of Quantrill were echoed throughout Missouri, “Vengeance is in my heart, death in my hand; blood and revenge are hammering in my head” (78). These feelings spilled out onto the streets of Lawrence as raiders executed prisoners, threatening to “kill every damn one of them” (92). Goodrich described the trampling, dismembering, and burning of the residents. Throughout the book, Goodrich alludes to locations, residences, and areas of Lawrence. The author included maps of the city, images of troop movement, and time tables to help readers better understand the chaotic scene that was Lawrence, Kansas (36, 85, 139).

The Warriors Ethos is a book written by Steven Pressfield, which was published in 2011. The book highlights a very rich history of warriors and their supporters alike. My goal with this paper is to draw some parallels between the examples in the book and what I took away as applicable to our lives as infantrymen In the United States Marine Corps. Chapter one is named “ Tough Mothers “. The chapter that stuck out to me most for giving perspective that I lacked prior to reading this book.

But for those who chose to stay in the cities, avoiding the disease meant avoiding people. Many shops closed down and some priests even refused to give people their last rites. Another interesting fact about Boccaccio’s book is that men and women are both portrayed as intelligent, attractive and articulate.
Have you ever noticed how setting plays a role in the story? In Ernest Hemingway story “ Soldier 's Home”, The author creates a distant feeling by using setting to portray Krebs disconnection toward the world and lack of setting details. “By the time Krebs return to his hometown in Oklahoma.” In the third paragraph it talks about Krebs returning to his hometown in Oklahoma, showing that he grew up in a small state shows how going to war was most likely a whole new scenery for him. This adds to him coming back from war, but being disconnected from his life at home because he has only known the war and the peaceful life he is reentering is much different to life on the battlefield.
In Liam O’Flaherty’s The Sniper, the main character, a sniper, is in the middle of a civil war in Dublin, Ireland. It is his assigned duty to assassinate anyone on the the other side of the war, no matter who they are. This creates a huge conflict, considering that the sniper ends up killing his brother. This supports the central theme that war is cruel, and this can be supported by the craft elements of the dialogue used and the setting of the story.
