Some people believe that killing another human being for the sake of “putting them out of their misery” is the right thing to do. They are wrong. The act of committing homicide cannot be reversed. He is taking away an indefinite amount of time from a person’s life : time that an individual might become stronger or even fully recover. That is why George should not have taken Lennie’s life away for the intention of saving his life.
George chose for him because he wasn’t mentally capable of choosing for himself. He also didn’t want to see him die in such a horrible, cruel, suffering
The decision was not murder though, it was a killing done out of kindness, caring and love. George wanted to end Lennie’s suffering, he was making a humane choice to keep Lennie from dying a dreadful death and he was keeping Lennie from hurting anyone else. Though some would argue that George murdered Lennie rather than killed him out of mercy. Mercy killing or euthanasia is only considered ethical
Some readers might conclude that Lennie’s death was an act of murder or simply euthanasia. However, these arguments fail to recognize that George’s action was not only an act of mercy, but also an act of justice. His decision to kill Lennie is justified for two main reasons: it served as an act of justice and helped Lennie avoid a painful fate. When George killed Lennie, it was an act of civil justice for society.
However, when George said he had to make this decision he was not just thinking about others around him, but also himself. With Lennie’s condition no one really knew who Lennie would hurt or when. With George killing Lennie helped everyone
Despite the fact that murder is with no doubt ethically incorrect, George was deemed justified for shooting Lennie because in his perspective, it was a matter
At another trial where a man killed his sister and his mom, this statement was made. “Anderson’s defense attorney labeled the deaths “mercy killings,” and described his client as a man who was “simply overcome” with the circumstances of caring for his ailing wife and sister”(Qtd. Serna). Killing someone in an act of love is completely different than killing someone in an act of hate. In comparison, George did the right thing in killing Lennie because it was an act of love.
The book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, is a tale set during the Great Depression, which is both heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time. It teaches lessons about the importance of dreams, friends, and the need for sacrifice. In doing so, it includes several examples of euthanasia or in other words, mercy killing. At one point in the story, George is forced to kill his good friend Lennie which has been a good companion to him for many years. Although George clearly loves the man, he should euthanize him so he doesn’t have to suffer through what Curley might do to him and so he doesn’t have to deal with the discrimination he gets from other men like Curley.
In comparison to this reality, a mother killed her autistic son, mercifully, to save him from his dad who according to the boy, “had shoved feces in his mouth, stuck needles under his fingernails, and stabbed him in the hand repeatedly in addition to sexual abuse.” (Qtd. In Rosenberg). This situation correlates with Lennie’s harsh circumstances and reveals how death can make all of this extra pain fade away. Furthermore it shows the correct amount of extremity that Lennie would have gone through if George let him survive and become captured by his hunters.
A mercy killing, or euthanasia, is painless killing of someone who is in despair, which Lennie is. Brittany Maynard, a strong supporter in mercy killings, believes that ending the hurt rather than letting it take over “is less suffering and less pain,” and that it is an opinion that “[provides] a lot of relief” (Briggs). Rather than letting Lennie live in a way in which is causing harm to himself, George shoots him, his reason being for keeping him safe. If George were to let Lennie go, Lennie would have to experience awful pain. George knows that he can not let that happen to Lennie, so he spares him
Although others might argue that it was murder because of how George went through with it, George uses euthanasia to kill his close friend Lennie. Being
Georgie Milton did something not many people have the guts to do, he took the life of his best friend to save him from the torture that awaited him, but, he took the life of another man and he took this life with the intention of murder. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, there is no difference between euthanasia and murder; and to this indictment, George Milton has pleaded not guilty. If I am to prove him otherwise, you must find him so. Lennie Small has been described to us as a caring giant. He had no bad intentions; and it is fair to say that our witnesses have provided us with sufficient evidence to support my argument.
In of Mice and Men a novel by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie the main characters go through a situation in which Lennis gets into some trouble, George tells him to hide and get away from what’s coming. From letting the guys get to Lennis, George kills him without suffering from what Curley will put him through. Even though the book shows Euthanasia (mercy killing) as a good thing it doesn’t mean you should do it in real life. Killing Lennie was entirely wrong but to save him from being torchered George did what he had to do to be at peace of mind. The fact that Lennie, a grown man has to have a person to look after him tells us something.
Many people find this as an example of euthanasia and look at it as an act of crime. Rather, George did the right thing by killing Lennie, and making sure
In Fort Lauderdale Florida a 86-year-old octogenarian man shot his 72-year-old wife who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease in the stairwell of a hospital, another man in Miami shot his 3-year-old daughter in the heart who has been in a coma after a freak accident. After the people exhausted all other forms of relief they switched to euthanasia as the last result for pain relief just like george did with lennie. George was trying so hard to keep him from trouble and have a normal life but knowing he would die a horrible death he had to kill him but this way Lennie lennie wouldn't have to suffer
