Railhead by Phillip Reeves is a gripping novel about Zen Sterling, a young man who gets offered a opportunity of a lifetime. Growing up with a unstable mother and hard-faced sister, Zen turns to petty theft to help make ends meets for his family, but all that changes on a seemingly ordinary day in the market in Ambersai when he meets a motorik in a red raincoat that he would soon come to know as Nova. Railhead by Phillip Reeves shows an important theme of what makes someone uniquely human and the possibility of a machine having qualities that could be attributed to a human being. Nova is a recurring character throughout the novel, she is a motorik that is faithfully loyal to Raven and is then assigned the job of assisting Zen with his mission.
