The Last Supporter---Best Friend
“There comes a point in your life when you realize: who matters, who never did, who won’t anymore… and who always will.” (Adam Lindsay Gordon poem) In Sherman Alexie’s novel, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian” reveals no matter how much conflict between Arnold Junior and Rowdy, ultimately, they both believe that they need to stay and support each other together. The speaker, a person experienced three different attitudes toward his best friend. For many, the best friend is someone who always tries to be there to help you, and Rowdy is someone who stands back at Junior when he has troubles. Junior undergoes lots of challenges in his life, and he is exhausted as a consequence of many people who matters to him were gone. The author writes that, “It made me think of Rowdy. I missed him so much. I wanted to find him and hug to forgive me for leaving.”(p180) His grandmother died at first, and then her sister also died. It can be like a thunderbolt out of a clear sky for him, and he felt lonely without Rowdy. These sentences illustrates that he needs friend’s encouragement right now. Through these hardships, Junior realizes that Rowdy is more important than hope, and he just a Spokane Indian belong to Wellpinit. Furthermore, the last sentence in this novel is that, “We didn’t keep score.” They have a long conversation before basketball game, and they accept each other again. Also, it shows that they become to their original life; they are like best friends have games together. In conclusion, Rowdy and Junior’s friendship is one of the clues run through the full text, and Junior maintains that Rowdy is his “best friend.” Junior needs to find his hope in Reardan; however, Rowdy’s hope is Junior and his cartoons, which means they have different goal for their life.
