The artifact that will be analyzed in this essay is Subaru’s “I’m Sorry” advertisement. The aim of this commercial is to explain to parents that their car is superior when it comes to the safety of their child. This is truly the phone call parents want. Teen accidents in America have become a huge problem. Teens in America are 1.6 times more likely to get in a car accident compared to adults (Jansen, 2016). In the last 5 years alone, 14,000 teens have tragically lost their lives due to a car accident. This has prompted several agencies and car companies to stress the safety of their product. There was a decline in the number of auto accidents in 2014 but this number just recently spiked. Causes of the Problem This spike in crashes involving teenagers are a result of many different things. There are four big reasons that teens are prone to car accidents. Distractions, speeding, driving at night, and seatbelt use are the four reasons teens are prone to car accidents (Car Accident Prevention, 2016). Distractions are usually when the teenage driver is either conversing or texting with friends. Texting is the biggest distraction that teen driving face today and they are far more likely to text and drive than other age groups (Car Accident Prevention, 2016). Speeding is another major reason for teen crashes. Teens define going at least 10 miles per hour over the speed limit as speeding (Car Accident Prevention, 2016).
