Throughout the process of this writing this essay, I had to consider the arguments that deemed this book inadequate and adequate for students, but my overall goal to create an evaluation based on these factors and determine its suitability in a high school course. The topic of schools not being able to hack into the minds of young students and bring out their hidden intellect is a problem in modern culture. Gerald Graff writes about this subject in his article “Hidden Intellectualism.” He is professor at the University of Illinois and the former president of the Modern Language Association. He talks about how schools fail to gain students attention by making them write essays on the classics, like Shakespeare, instead of starting out with topics the students would enjoy, such as sports, video games, and fashion. He makes valid arguments about how the schools fail to tap into that hidden intellectualism of the students, and he uses pathos, logos, and ethos; and so therefore his essay is mostly successful.

A young veteran revealed the feelings of his fellow soldiers towards Afghans during a debate on the Vietnam War. I had always felt insightful when it came to school work, but now I felt like a child, that anything I had to offer in class was so narrow-minded I could only appear arrogant. There was only one course of action to take.

Each year, education is becoming challenging in today's marketplace. Thus, many people, including students question whether community college tuition should be free given. That is what I have strived to achieve in the essays presented within this portfolio. Beyond the confines of the classroom, I have found that these practices of identifying, summarizing, and entering the conversation have enabled me to discern what the issue truly is when a societal or economic predicament arises. However, I realize that these three basic elements of an academic essay are just that, basic. They lay down the foundation for all of the essays that I will hopefully get the opportunity to write and provide me with a set of guidelines that I can refer back if I ever experience the notorious “writer’s
