What would you do if every single person around you could hear your every thoughts, and you could hear all of theirs? You see, on the fictional ‘New World’ from the novel The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, there is a thing called Noise. Noise is what makes every thought a person can think of be heard by those around them. However, women can’t be heard. Now, this story, to me, revolves around the choices we make, and how those choice can define who we are and what will become of us. As said in the sequel, “We are the choices we make”, page 18, The Ask and the Answer, Patrick Ness. Now, I’m going to give 4 examples of times in the novel where making a certain choice ended up showing us who Todd really was. Throughout the story, we see our main character Todd make tough decisions, decisions that describe what kind of character he is. The first major decision he had to make was when he was forced to leave his two father figures in the town, Ben and Cillian, when Davy Prentiss Jr. comes to ‘take’ Todd, pages 54-55, The Knife of Never Letting Go, Patrick Ness. This is what spoke to me the most about this story. Sometimes, even the smallest choices can end up having a major impact. This can be compared to the Butterfly Effect. The butterfly effect is that a tornado can be caused by the air coming from the flapping of a butterfly’s wings a week before the tornado came. Essentially, it means that a seemingly small and useless action can be the cause of a major disaster or problem. For this story’s theme however, it’s the choice we choose to make, not just a mindless action you may not even think about. Now, all the choices he made ended up giving him the opportunity to meet Viola, not become a cold blooded killer, move on from those he loved, and it helped him make the right choice. Also, if he hadn’t done any of those things, he would’ve been dead at least five times
