In Ross’ short story “The Lamp Lit at Noon” there is person vs person and person vs nature conflict throughout the story. Conflict is to come into collision or disagreement. It is also known as the struggle between opposition. Paul and Ellen have different opinions on what they want. Ellen wants to leave their farm on the prairies because the vicious storms are preventing them from going anything. Paul believes in the farm and is strong with his opinion to stay. There are two types of conflict present in this literature: person vs person and person vs nature. Person vs person is evident in this short story when Ellen and Paul argue. Ellen and Paul are living through very tough times on their farm. The weather is relentless against their crops and it has done detrimental things to their family. Ellen cannot even take their baby out of its crib without risking the baby’s life. Work and money are hard to come by as well. The depression has impacted them greatly and they are struggling. Due to the hard times, Ellen and Paul are consistently fighting and disagreeing with each other. Ellen does not think the living conditions are suitable for their baby. Paul and Ellen are living off their land through the harsh weather conditions. The wind and dust storms are destroying their crops and they can barley feed their animals let alone themselves. Their baby is suffering due to the dust storms. The author accurately depicts the struggle with nature: “Dust and drought, Earth that betrayed alike his labour and his faith, to him the struggle has given sternness, an impossible courage” (Ross 64-68). The struggle the author is referring to is the struggle he has against nature. The hard times test his faith and give him courage.
