W.W. Jacobs uses foreshadowing and other literary techniques to create tones of mystery, tension, suspense, and surprise in each part of his work “The Monkey’s Paw”. The first example of mystery is presented in part one when the soldier says, “The first man had his three wishes, yes… I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how I got the paw.” This leaves the reader questioning several points; why did the man before him wish for death?

For instance, in paragraphs 18 and 19 from “The Monkey’s Paw” when the Sergeant-Major Morris is asked the question “What was that you started telling me the other day about a monkey’s paw or something, Morris?” by Mr. White, Morris hurriedly replied saying “Nothing’’.
“The Monkey’s Paw” and, “The Third Wish” are similar in some ways. In both stories they get granted three wishes. Both stories, the wishes aren’t used very wisely . They thought about their wishes pretty well but honestly didn’t turn out as expected.

He mentions that “the uncanny grimness of ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ by a pathos that is wrought to a pitch of almost painful intensity when the knock comes on the door at night and the heart-broken mother, after struggling desperately with the bolts, flings the door open and there is nothing there” (Adcock 3). The family makes an avoidable mistake by wishing with the monkey’s paw, but when they finally realize that, it is already too late. Their first innocent wish flips their lives upside down and they bring themselves irreversible pain and sorrow through a few words. Carl Mowery, a professor at several universities with a doctorate in rhetoric and composition, gives a great statement about the story as a whole.
W. W. Jacobs presents many examples of mystery and tension throughout his story, “The Monkey’s Paw”. Using different techniques and styles, Jacobs creates various tones which cause the reader to feel surprised and anxious. In the opening of the story, Jacobs describes the night as “cold and wet”, but he also states the White family had their blinds drawn and the fire was burning. This shows the reader the family is, in a way, shut off from the world.
The title, “The Monkey's Paw” was used multiple times throughout the story; At first It’s meaning or use was just what it was, a Monkey’s Paw that seemed like someone's old souvenir or a memento. But throughout the story it changes into deeper and more perplexing meanings. The paw’s meaning became things like the relenting desire to fix mistakes and regrets, and the symbol of greed and ignorance; shown by the wishes from Mr. and Mrs.White, but It’s true meaning is that you can’t control all things In life, and that you shouldn’t take things for granted. This is one of the most important parts of the story, It’s where the real conflict started and where part of the message Is the quotation or part in the story where Morris warns Mr.White about

In the beginning of each passage, the author creates a sense of mystery and curiosity for the readers. As each passage reveals the characters in the story, the reader begins to relate the characters role from each story and how they act towards the conflict in the text. These different events, conflicts, or plot in both stories connect with death and wishes.
