As reflected in the literature review of this paper, there were several themes of communication throughout my observation. These three themes, structured communication, consolidation of information, and masculine communication, all lend themselves to my overall analysis of the Student Government Association. Before the analysis begins, we will look at specific examples of each of these themes, starting with structured communication. Frostburg State University’s Student Government Association does rely on Roberts Rules of Order to run their general body meetings. The structure of the meetings is obvious, and breaking of that structure is clearly frowned upon. For instance, when making a motion the pattern was as followed:
“I would like to make a motion to ______”, then the Parliamentarian would say, “Would anyone like to second that motion”, and another Senator would echo “I would like to second that motion.” Finished with “The motion has been passed”.
Never was this wording or pattern broken within a general body meeting. In addition, the consolidation of information at the meetings limited the communication members had with one another. In the matter of the Student Government Association, this is seen between those elected executive officials and the general senate members. The executive board even meets without those general members, and they make decisions without them as well. It can also be seen in the way members communicative with one another. In a straightforward way, this may be seen as just those executive members telling the rest what tasks to do, however that is not always the case.
