Henry James in the funeral article of Lippincott’s Magazine from July 1877, issues a negative tone on describing the people attending, but is being positive about Mr. George Odger. The diction of James is agitating for the people that are present yet magnificent because it’s the funeral of an honorable man, who defended the poor. The occasion caused Mr. James talking “indecent “about the low class people, calling them “dregs” of “itinerants”. He is discriminating the poor and insulting them.
In The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, the governess worked at Bly and was in charge of caring for two children, Miles and Flora. While at Bly, she had multiple encounters with two ghosts, Peter Quint and Miss Jessel. After seeing Quint and Miss Jessel multiple times and discussing them with Mrs. Grose, the governess was set on the idea that they are haunting Bly in order to take over the souls of the children. She felt that it was her job as their governess to protect them at all costs. This caused her to have to face the ghosts, instead of being able to ignore them and pretend they are not there.
In the first two chapters, Blight provides the reader with his analysis of Washington’s and Turnage’s life. John Washington was an urban slave living a town life and running errands as a house servant for his master in northern Virginia. Washington’s life allows us to see a different side of slavery, one that was close to comparable to the life of a free man. The treatment he received from his master as a city slave was not as gruesome as that of Turnage, who was more of a rural slave. Rural slaves worked from morning to evening, doing work that was tiring and more involving.
John Proctor is basically the tragic hero of “The Crucible”, the reason for this is statement is because the tries to save his wife from being hanged. He cares about his children, he also has tried not to cheat on his wife Elizabeth, while she was ill. At the end of the story Proctor is hanged due of his confession of being a warlock. In the rising action of the story John Proctor is trying to avoid Abigail, he states that “But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again.”
At last, a tragic hero realized his bad and try to fix that into right way. In the book “the crucible” John Proctor said to lawyer and judgement that “Tell them I confessed myself: say Proctor broke his knees and wept like a woman:say what you will, but my name cannot-”(p62). It reflects that he is trying to be honest, and also trying to be a good father to his child and husband to Elizabeth. This is because, if he confess and avoid death, his child cannot inherited anything and Elizabeth lived with suffer because her husband is a witch. But, Proctor doesn’t confess that he is witch, and be honest to his child and wife.
Style analysis Henry James Passage In “Henry James Passage,” his mocking and sarcastic tones reflects his feelings towards the lower class people in the funeral, and his view on their importance. The man was attending Mr. George Odger’s funeral. Mr. George Odger was a lower class man and poorer people arranged his funeral. Henry James felt the funeral was a joke and continues to describe it as one.
In times in hysteria and crisis, people will do all they can do to redirect blame from themselves. This is exemplified in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, and “Half Hanged Mary”, by Margaret Atwood. The Crucible is a story about a Puritan village that experiences a major crisis in which people, predominantly women, are believed to be witches. This causes a series of events in which people are hanged, simply for being alive. Half Hanged Mary is a poem about a woman who is hanged for being a witch, but does not die.
In the novel, “Lord of The Flies,” the author, William Golding, relies on the characterization of Jack to develop the central idea that it is the natural evil and immorality in all humans that ultimately leads to the destruction of a society. Before Jack is even introduced as a character, he is compared to a creature of darkness when Golding describes, “the eye was first attracted to a black, bat-like creature that danced on the sand.” This comparison foreshadows Jack’s true darkness before he was made known to the readers. Jack’s archetype as “The Ruler” is established right from the moment he is introduced. One of the boys, Roger, suggested that they vote for chief but “Jack started to protest”, which demonstrates his desire for control.

Humans are born to be afraid. A feeling of fear is only natural for humans to feel; it is a part of who we are. However, it can be more than just a feeling. Fear can be a weakness in humans even though it is only our natural instinct for survival. Sometimes, fear is so powerful that it can blur our rationality and dominate how we think and what we do.
Both Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” and Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird” are both books that present us with the theme of ‘men of conscience’. John Proctor and Atticus Finch, both fictional characters from the books, are considered to be ‘men of conscience’. A man of conscience is a man aware of the moral and ethical judgements he has a strong desire to do the right thing whenever possible. The life of these men is ruled by their desire to seek the truth and justice in the situations around them; these traits are displayed in both of the characters throughout both the novel and the play.
James I, born June 19, 1566, was the King of England, Great Britain, and was Scotland 's short-lived king. James was known to be a controversial ruler and was hated by Parliament. He thought he had the “divine right” to rule England and the rest of its territories. Divine right means to have been given power by God, himself. James I was first born the king of Scotland but James I became king of England after Queen Elizabeth died.
The Last of The Mohicans is an intriguing novel that took me by surprise. Initially, when I set upon reading the story written by James Fenimore Cooper, I expected a very different experience from what I was left with afterward. I expected to be reading the love story that I had watched in the 1992 film based on the book. However, I was presented with a story much more intriguing and brutal than what I expected, and much different from the movie. The story in the book provided me with a gritty and bloody war story that changed my thoughts and ideas of the French and Indian War and early colonial warfare as a whole.
Society often sets roles and expects for everyone to conform to the common mold. Therefore, in “The Pupil” when one of characters does not fit the mold that is expected for society, he is presented as weak and inferior. In the passage from “The Pupil” Henry James uses an ironic tone, and a third person limited point of view in order to present the complexities in the relationships among the three characters to set a hierarchy among the characters. James establishes a tense tone as the young man is afraid of Mrs. Moreen and what could potentially happen in his future job.
Before the 20th century the horror genre was not as famous, but started to become popular in the 20th century with what some people think, the help of Henry James. The horror in the book keeps the reader on the edge of their seat wondering what will happen next, which is why I liked it. Filled with this curiosity ambiguity is used so the reader has to make their own conclusion of the book. In The Turn of the Screw, Henry James uses ambiguity in his book so the reader can arrive at what they want to believe in but at the same time question what they think.
