Sheldon M. Stern’s book The Week the World Stood Still gave eye opening information into the secrets of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the ‘inner sanctum of the Kennedy administration during the Cuban Missile Crisis, arguing convincingly that Kennedy acted with great caution during one of the great showdowns of the cold war.’ Sheldon strongly believed that JFK had made the correct decisions while he was in the risky situation including Cuba and their missiles. Writing the book was easy for Sheldon, as he was a historian at the John F. Kennedy library. He had access to the recordings that Kennedy had taken many years ago.
The Cosmic Race is an essay written by Mexican philosopher Jose Vasconcelos to express the future race in the Americas and how the new emergent will occur. The first part of the essay was entitled “Mestiza” discusses the myth of the fall and rise of Atlantis in the American missions he encounters the white race as the worlds invader. Vasconcelos sees the Latin America as the land for developments the land that is open to strangers and not racist towards other cultures.

“The Cosmic perspective” Written by Neal deGrasse Tyson, is an essay that goes in-depth on the beauty of the universe. At the beginning of the essay, Tyson talks about how the ideas of astronomy came from simple beginnings scientifically but have advanced with humanity. In Addition to this, Tyson talks about how the scientific perspective can only be studied by those with the privilege of not focusing on survival. Tyson gives a litany of examples demonstrating how science has increased humanity's collective knowledge. Tyson's main idea in the text is that the cosmic perspective allows us to see the beauty of the universe beyond earth, and why we should focus more on getting all members of society to that point.
In the Collapse Series, by Summer Lane, Cassidy Hart is fighting a mysterious and evil world organization that has taken over the United States known as Omega. During the first eight books, she sees the destruction Omega has caused and begins to form an effective resistance that eventually secures many regions of California. None of this however, would have been possible without the help of Chris Young, who Cassidy finds on the first day of Omega’s invasion. Their relationship quickly becomes romantic and they eventually become engaged by the end of the eighth book. When Cassidy believes Chris has died in the ninth book there is a dramatic shift in her persona that carries into the final book of the series.
Whoever says science states facts isn’t saying the truth because science is always evolving and making new discoveries. Climate change is going to be a big concern, it’s going to cause a mass change in agriculture, the rising heat will affect farmers and how they grow crops. The burning toxic chemicals cannot lead to a positive outcome as well, it may rise health problems and create different types of dieses that’ll affect mankind. Science has its predictions, but how solid can these predictions be? “The Myth of ‘Settled Science.’” is an article written by Charles Krauthammer that addresses a different point of view on global warming.
Situation: This piece of writing is argumentative based to discuss how scientism is not necessarily the answer to everything but plays a large role in society. In 2012, author Massimo Pigliucci uses the show “The Big Bang Theory” to discuss how science is highly important and necessary for our world to grow, but cannot replace literature, philosophy, and art because each aspect is needed for humans to thrive. An example from the text being that character Howard from the show has an equation to calculate his chances of having sex by figuring out the number of single women who may find him to be attractive (pg. 279). Pigliucci is pointing out that instead of exuding confidence and finding a female to talk to, Howard just uses science to justify why he can or cannot find a female to be with. The same issue is involving Sheldon when he creates “The Friendship Algorithm” in order to make friends (pg. 280).
Jeff Vandermeer's Annihilation focuses on observation of the individuals and their environment as if it is a social experiment and psychological evaluation. First, the expedition was controlled by "the Southern Reach, the clandestine government agency that dealt with all matters connected to Area X" (Vandermeer 10). The novel begins with four female characters: a biologist, surveyor, psychologist and anthropologist, are told to observe each other and chronicle their experience in a detailed journal. Once the four women reach the "tower or tunnel" the biologist mentions this line, "The discussion of the tower was, in a way, our first opportunity to test the limits of our disagreements and of compromise" (Vandermeer 12). Edward Dolnick’s Clockwork Universe focuses on the scientific revolution of the 17th century. Dolnick takes the stance that the pivotal figures of the time believed that God had created a perfectly running universe that they could decipher. He also mentions the timely restrictions that scientists had to deal with and explains how their findings changed the way people looked at the world. Throughout his book, Dolnick provides several different scientists that held this belief and shows how they prove his thesis. While Dolnick presents a solid argument, he drags on a bit in the discussion of calculus, and at times exaggerates the societies he is portraying.

Humans are dependent on fossil fuels to meet its energy requirements which in return produces carbon dioxide and other harmful gases.
