Most students think of going to college after high school, what many of them don’t know is why college is important or even what profession they want to study. Alex Tabarrok use of logos, ethos and tone help him very well in his argument that student should stop graduating in visual and performing arts and should focus on degrees that require STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) In the article “Turning In to Dropping Out”. Andrew Delbanco use of logos, ethos, tone, and counter argument help him significantly towards his argument that college is still important in the article “3 Reasons Why College Still Matters”. Both Tabarrok and Delbanco use the rhetorical device of logos well in order to support their arguments.
Couple examples of logos was when Skloot’s mentions, “According to Howard Jones and other gynecologic oncologists I talked with, the correct diagnosis wouldn’t have changed the way Henrietta’s cancer was treated”(Skloot 172) and “In 1928 a German virologist named Harald zur Hausen discovered a new strain of a sexually transmitted virus called Human Papilloma Virus 18 (HPV-18).'' (Skloot 212) She uses reliable sources and discreetly informs the reader that she isn’t saying things out of thin air but instead she uses proper sources to validate her points in her novel. She uses logos by discussing scientific information and explanations, as well as the degree of Henrietta’s impact on
One argument the anti-educator and anti-sex groups have is that they are doing it “for the children”, but in reality they are only doing it for themselves and using the children as an excuse. On page 8 Klein states that these groups claim that by providing their children abstinence only education they are protecting them from being interested in sex, hearing about a variety of different sex practices, having sex (resulting in emotional devastation, pregnancy or diseases), ruining future marriage, and liking or enjoying sex too much to the point it gets out of hand. But, in reality they are only damaging their
In many of the colleges today a "hookup" has changed in definition. In other words, hookup once meant a romantic relationship but, Hookups today can be "all about throwing off the bonds of relationships and dating for carefree sex" (Freitas). At least that is what Donna Freitas says in the article "Time to stop hooking up. (You know you want to.)". Through the article she explains how a hookup has changed and how it has to stop because of it affecting the way teenagers see a relationship.
Throughout this article the author uses logos to show how she views college athletes. Logos is when the author tries to use logic and facts to back up his idea. The first example I found was when the author explained how she never practiced more than 20 hours a week for her specific sport she did while in college ( Jackson). The reason they did not practice for a long time was because the coaches wanted the student-athletes to focus more on the academic side of things.
notes at the bottom of each of the 60 pages. These notes contain the references on that page, the authors also put up some references to help the people who are reading the article to understand. Logos is the appeal to logic; this mode of persuasion intends to persuade the writer’s or speaker’s audience by utilization of rationale or reason. To utilize logos, one must refer to actualities and measurements, verifiable and exacting analogies, and referring to specific experts regarding a matter. This entire article is logos based, in which this type of article is research.
One example of the author using logos to persuade the audience is Hill stated “With over 300 entries from around the world, I got it, my own little jewel box. By buying a space that was 420 sq. ft. instead of 600, immediately I’m saving 200 grand.” This quote shows the audience the benefits of purchasing a smaller space, the main benefit is saving $200,000 for getting 180 square feet less space. This helps persuade the audience of living a more minimalistic lifestyle, as it gives a reason to live more minimalistic.
Logos is the most effective rhetorical appeal which uses logical thinking and facts to persuade the audience. The most effective way to persuade someone is with pure facts or data such as statistics. Hence, Selingo also provides several strong logo examples throughout his essay and easily convinces his audience. For example, Selingo claims that jobs can give young people a rhythm to their day, “ it’s where [students] learn the importance of showing up on time, keeping to a schedule, completing a list of tasks, and being accountable to a manager who might give them their first dose of negative feedback so they finally realize they’re not as great as their teachers, parents, and college acceptance letters have led them to believe”(para. 11).
In her article, “Guns-When Trump Can’t Even Tweet,” Gail Collins uses appeals to logos in order to get her message across about the need for gun control. Logos is the appeal to logic, which helps convince an audience by use of logic or reason. Many authors use logos as a tool in their writing in order to appeal to the reader’s intellect. Collins first uses the logos tool in the beginning of her article.
Logos can back up what is being said, and strengthen what is being argued. Selingo talks about how students go into college with no experience in jobs and he backs this up with “The number of teenagers who have some sort of job while in school has dropped from nearly 40% in 1990 to just 205 today, an all-time low since the United states started keeping track in 1948,” (paragraph 2). This backs up what is being said by using real data from real sources to give the reader real insight and side with Selingo. Logos can also be used to ensure that what the reader is reading is factual. Selingo talks about how students would work full time and that “they would earn only $15,000 a year at federal minimum wage.
The author using quotations often but seem to be mostly pathos based and are not really effective in reasoning with logic. The author also uses real-life examples. These do provide a bit of logic and understanding but again mostly lean towards pathos again. The only logos that was really effective to me was the factual data and statistics. This really helped me to understand the race problem in Madison and helps me make sense of what happened to Tony Robinson and how this is not the only race problem going on in Madison.
Logos is persuasion through reasoning, clarity, supporting evidence, and logic. These three elements are used in nearly
Logos is the appeal to the audience’s logic or thinking of constructing a well-reasoned argument. It includes: facts, research, and statistics. For instance, "And what have we to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Have we anything new to offer on the subject?
The survey has shown that 40% have experienced sexual intercourse and year 12 rates are higher than hear 10. an increase was shown in the overall rate for year 12 of sexual intercourse, up by 35% in 2002, while Year 10 students rates were alike in 2002 and 2008. Females that contributed appeared somewhat more likely to have sex than men though this statistic was not significant. Half of the students that have experienced sex was with their partner in the previous 12 months, 15% have experienced sex with 2 people and 30% with three or more people. Males are more expected to have sexual intercourse with 3 or more partners.
Introduction 1. Attention Getter: The provision of sex education in schools has been a controversial subject matter among different education stakeholders ranging from parents to educators. A focus, however, on the prevalence of adolescents’ abortion, pregnancy, and HIV and AIDS rates indicates significantly high rates.
