Eric Buchman, a popular TV writer, recently wrote an article for the New York Times titled, Football Has Become Too Real to Watch. Buchman’s argument, which is not only laid out in the title but also in the last sentence of the article, is that the joy of football, something many have experienced for years, has been sucked out of fans due to the reality of current issues within the NFL. Buchman wrote this article in an effort to inform football fans, and even everyday people, of the often-omitted issues involved with the NFL. Out of the three rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos, there is one that confuses me more than the others, logos.
Rainie filled his article with facts, studies, and statistics. These are examples of logos in writing. It gives the author the opportunity to get their main point across without using their personal opinion. A 21-year-old in the work force today has "5,000 hours of video game playing" (Rainie 226). This fact brings up one of the main points of the article; the new workforce is different.
“You’re not supposed to be here” (Nike 0:05-0:07). Lebron James says this many times throughout the commercial Come out of Nowhere. People may take these comments in a literal sense as they start out the commercial, but by the end people learn the true meaning of why Lebron keeps saying “You’re not supposed to be here”(Nike 0:05-0:07). Nike has created a variety of different commercials that have advertised their products, but this commercial portrays a different message. A message that gives hope through emotions and it truly lets you know that you can believe this message because Lebron went through a similar situation.
Couple examples of logos was when Skloot’s mentions, “According to Howard Jones and other gynecologic oncologists I talked with, the correct diagnosis wouldn’t have changed the way Henrietta’s cancer was treated”(Skloot 172) and “In 1928 a German virologist named Harald zur Hausen discovered a new strain of a sexually transmitted virus called Human Papilloma Virus 18 (HPV-18).'' (Skloot 212) She uses reliable sources and discreetly informs the reader that she isn’t saying things out of thin air but instead she uses proper sources to validate her points in her novel. She uses logos by discussing scientific information and explanations, as well as the degree of Henrietta’s impact on
College athletes are “potential professional athletes, not professional athletes. Being that they are not professional athletes is one reason many people believe that they do not deserve to be paid. According to (Zimbalist) A key point as to why the NCAA would not want to pay athletes is to maintain the amature status of its reputaion. In the U.S News and World report, Andrew Zimbalist provides a definition of amature as “someone who engages in the activity for fun, not for remuneration”.
Are they students or employees? They spend more time with the sport than in school. Student athletes should be acknowledged for their performances. College athletes should be paid to play because they bring money into the school, advertisement, and they perform the same tasks of pros. College kids bring in thousands of dollars every game day.
Mike says”Students all over the world work hard at the sport that true love and don’t get a lot in return for it”. While college athletes may not exactly be employees, they are more than just students. Consider the life of a student-athlete, though. The average Division I football player dedicates over 43hours per week to his sport, meaning that he spends more than a typical American work-week training and playing football, in addition to his class work. Their work, which generates exorbitant amounts of money year in and year out, deserves Compensation.
Athletes don’t realize what they actually do to deserve the honor of being on the team and getting free tuition as a part of the
Similarly, men’s baseball caps have been making a comeback. Originally, they are worn with their team logos on it or they are sold in retail stores with the company’s logo such as Nike or Reebok. Additionally, many self-employed business such as Anti-Social Social Club have been developing different colors and logos for the baseball cap. Athletes tend to prefer these hats because it does not cover their head but blocks the sun from their eyes while playing sports. Now, baseball cap are both functional and stylish.
Advocates for the NCAA claim that student athletes should not get paid because academics come first and sports are extra-curricular activities. However, the statistics do not back up the NCAA’s core values. For example, the NCAA Basketball Tournament requires up to 6 missed classes, many nationally televised games are played on weeknights, and this year the Florida State football team missed the first day of spring classes due to the national championship. Obviously, the NCAA is very concerned with the education of student athletes but it also seems as if the NCAA puts increasing revenue and publicity ahead of the importance of
The Ethos of Egos Michael Jordan, has scored more points (5,987) in the playoffs than any other player in the history of the NBA. There are many facts and statistics that one could site in regard to basketball, but I believe that this one is the most important. The playoffs are when it counts. A team could win every single game in the regular season, but if they slip up even a little in the playoffs, all those regular season wins become obsolete. That is why Michael Jordan being the all-time leading scorer in the playoffs marks him as the best player to ever play the game.
Student athletes are overlooked and when it comes down to it, frankly, are not respected. Sure a small percent get famous but what happens to the rest of the athletes. If you don’t perform to a certain extent, colleges cast a dark cloud over you and try to hide your existence. Some live with the bare minimum because they can’t afford simple needs like food and clothing. This disgusting cycle of
How Financial Grades Impact the Athletes Academic reasons take away a lot of opportunities for athletes, affects their scholarship opportunity. Academic Decisions can cause a negative outcome by not being able to qualify to play at the collegiate level. The athlete’s talents become taken for granted and could cause the athlete to become depressed and let their talent become a waste of time. Meyers (2005) uses a quote that states that “They act as liai-sons between the academic and athletics communi-ties and are primarily responsible for ensuring that student-athletes have as much academic success as their ability can afford.
Based in the evidence that I have presented above you will agree with my claim that athletes who receive a full athletic scholarship to college, then the athlete should be forced to stay in college for four or more years. Many people may make the statement of, “Who cares if a college athlete stays in college?” However, this matter should be taken seriously and should be taken into consideration by the NBA, NFL, NHL, and other professional sports leagues, because this is a matter that affects not only the athlete’s future life, but their families lives too. Many families’ happiness comes from their child, sibling, or even a family friend succeeding in something that they are passionate towards. By the athlete succeeding in life affects
Logos is the appeal to the audience’s logic or thinking of constructing a well-reasoned argument. It includes: facts, research, and statistics. For instance, "And what have we to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Have we anything new to offer on the subject?
