The novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” was written in 1852, by Harriet Beecher Stowe. “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is a story about slave owners seeing the cruelties of slavery. Before Stowe’s novel, abolitionism was unpopular, even in the North. The book changed everything. The North was shocked by the truth about slavery, and quickly adopted an abolitionist’s view.
The Abolition Movement had happened between the years of 1830s through 1860s. The main reason for the Abolition Movement was to end slavery. Abolitionist who had believed that slavery had been wrong or a sin had been overpowering those who didn’t agree at the time, because of escapes. One way thousands of slaves had escaped slavery was because of safe houses and the underground railroad. Also, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Frederick Douglass were apart of the abolition movement, because Harriet had wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin to show what really goes on being a slave, and Frederick had fought for their rights.

Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, was a very controversial book for its time because it focused on slaves and their lives. The book focuses on a couple slaves and their masters. One of the main slaves, Eliza, who is married to George, was tested many times and got through a lot of challenges. In the book, her and George can not legally get married, none of the slaves at that time could, but their masters let them live together. George was working in a factory and living somewhere else because his master loaned him out for work.
One major life lesson I acquired from this unit is that emotions can sometimes get in the way and play a big part in the decisions people make. During the times of slavery authors Douglass and Stowe helped audience members understand the meaning of slavery and why they push for the act of Freedom. Freedom back then was very scarce for slaves and it brought domesticity to argue that slavery was both un-Christian and destructive to family life. Both authors saw that slavery was not an option. Douglass himself was a part of slavery, but he later escaped to stop slavery. Stowe was a biblical woman, she stated that “slavery was evil and could no longer be tolerated”.
In reference to the novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, the entire conversation that took place between both Mr and Mrs Bird revolves around the issue of humanity, in which, Mr Bird believes one shall be bound to follow the law of the state, regardless as to whether, it is evil or not, however Mrs Bird on the other hand, believes and argues, one shall not be bound by the law of the state, upon which, to add further, if it results in an inhuman act, since she is more fond to act in accordance to the guidance provided in the Bible. In regards to Thomas Aquinas theory on just and unjust laws, he believes that law is created for the purpose of common good and must have and end or goal. He stated further that the law has to be made by someone who cares for the community as a whole and has the power to influence others in order to obey and follow the law created. Such a law created should be acknowledged to the nation by way of promulgation. Thus, as a whole, he asserted that, those are the necessary conditions which are sufficient to be fulfilled, failure which, may result in an act of violence not as a law.
Through Uncle Tom’s Cabin, was used to denounce the horrific life of slavery. Thus, calling the attention of the people not particularly in favor of the abolition. The strategy is focused on the real day-to-day struggles of a slave. The character Tom is depicted as someone who had been sold several times and has to endure brutality by his masters and by the people handling him. Additionally, Stowe softens the image of slaves by making Christianity a central focus of their lives.
The anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe was written at a time when slavery was a largely common practice among Americans. Stowe was a Christian who believe that religion would be a major factor in the abolishment of slavery. The point of the story is to reach out to white America to abolish the slavery, but she could not do it alone. Stowe knew that the only way to get at the people who shielded the idea of abolishment out was to go to the highest power ever known at the time, God.
